Chapter 4 - The Betrayal in the Ledgers

The revelation hung in the air like a lethal gas.

I stumbled backward, my knees hitting the edge of the velvet armchair, forcing me to sit down before my legs gave out completely. My mind raced backward through the years of my marriage, pulling up fragmented memories that suddenly took on a sinister, terrifying clarity.

"No," I whispered, shaking my head violently. "No, you're wrong. Marco loved us. He worked sixty hours a week in the rain and snow. He came home with calloused hands and bruises. He cried when Clara took her first steps!"

"A master criminal knows how to play any role, Elena," Alessandro said, his voice laced with cold fury as he paced across the Persian rug. "When my brother's estate was attacked, the digital financial logs disappeared along with forty million euros in syndicate capital. Everyone assumed the rival Falcone family took the money. But the Falcones were slaughtered three days later, and the money never surfaced."

He stopped walking and turned his piercing gaze directly onto me.

"For five years, I hunted every ghost in Europe trying to find those accounts," Alessandro continued. "I thought Marco was dead. The police found a body in the river matching his general description six months after he vanished, and I closed the file. But if Marco faked his death... if he assumed a false identity, married you, and hid out in the slums using my niece as a living shield..."

"He never told me!" I cried out, hot tears finally spilling over my lashes and cutting tracks through the dust on my cheeks. "He told me he was an orphan from Turin! He told me he worked honest construction jobs because he hated the corporate world! If I had known... if I had any idea..."

"I know you didn't know, Elena," Alessandro said, his tone softening just a fraction as he stepped closer. He knelt down beside my chair, looking up into my face with an expression of profound, aching sorrow. "If you had known who Marco really was, you and Clara wouldn't have been living in a damp basement surviving on charity bins."

I buried my face in my hands, sobbing openly as the fragile illusion of my marriage, my past, and my life shattered into a million jagged pieces. Everything I thought I knew—every struggle, every shared crust of bread, every tender word Marco whispered in the dark—was built on a foundation of lies, blood, and stolen money.

"Where is it?" Alessandro asked gently, placing a warm, heavy hand over my trembling knuckles. "The money, Elena. Or the ledgers. Did Marco leave anything behind before he died?"

I shook my head through my tears. "Nothing. Just an old metal toolbox in our basement storage locker. It was locked with a heavy padlock. He always told me it contained his old engineering diplomas and work tools. I never opened it because I didn't have the key."

Alessandro stood up instantly, his cold, lethal authority snapping back into place like a coiled spring. He walked to the door and pulled it open.

Two armed guards snapped to attention in the hallway.

"Get a tactical team down to the old tenement basement on Via Dante immediately," Alessandro commanded, his voice ringing with absolute power. "Open storage locker 4B. Bring me everything inside—every paper, every drive, every scrap of metal. If anyone interferes, eliminate them."

"Yes, Boss," the lead guard barked, turning on his heel and sprinting down the corridor.

Alessandro closed the door and turned back to me. He walked over to the sofa where little Clara was still sleeping soundly, clutching her cream-colored teddy bear against her chest. He stood over her for a long moment, his broad shoulders rising and falling heavily as he watched her chest move in rhythm.

"She has my mother's eyes," Alessandro whispered, so quietly I almost didn't hear him. "I haven't seen those eyes in six years... since the night the world went dark."
