Chapter 5 - The Clean Sweep

Vincent slowly unbuckled his holster and let his heavy firearm drop to the marble floor with a loud THUD.

He fell to his knees, his hands behind his head, his face wet with cold sweat. “Boss... please! It was Vivian! She offered me two million dollars! She said you were going to marry the maid and cut me out of the family business!”

“Shut up, you idiot!” Vivian screamed, her aristocratic composure completely shattered as the house guards grabbed her arms, pinning her against the wall! “Lorenzo, listen to me! My father will destroy you for this! You can't touch me!”

Lorenzo didn't even look at Vivian. He made a subtle motion with his hand to his head of estate security, Marco—a veteran enforcer who had been loyal to Lorenzo’s father for thirty years.

“Marco,” Lorenzo ordered coldly. “Take Miss Bellini and Mr. Russo down to the basement holding rooms. Contact Federal Prosecutor Vance. Hand over the video files, the financial paper trails, and the tampered evidence.”

Marco’s eyes widened slightly. “Federal Prosecutor Vance, Boss? That will expose the Bellini family’s shipping network to a federal grand jury.”

“That is the point,” Lorenzo replied, his voice dead and devoid of mercy. “By tomorrow morning, the Bellini family will be under federal indictment for attempted murder, grand theft, and corporate extortion. They will never step foot on Long Island again.”

Vivian began to wail hysterically as Marco and three armed guards dragged her and Vincent down the long stone corridor leading to the basement, their frantic screams fading into the heavy walls of the mansion until total silence returned to the grand hall.

The remaining guards quickly cleared the room, shutting the heavy oak entrance doors, leaving only the family behind.

The air in the hall finally felt clean.

Sophia was still kneeling on the floor, holding five-year-old Isabella and three-year-old Emma in her arms, her head bowed, sobbing quietly with overwhelming relief.

Lorenzo set his revolver on the side table, walked slowly across the hall, and dropped to his knees right in front of them.

He reached out his broad, calloused hands, gently picking up the four glass heart prescription bottles from the floor. He set them carefully aside, then looked at the faded pink backpack lying open on the marble.

He picked up the pink bag, brushing the dust off the hand-embroidered letters: EMMA.

“Sophia,” Lorenzo said softly, his deep voice filled with a profound, unshakeable sincerity.

Sophia looked up, her red, tear-streaked eyes meeting his. “Mr. Moretti... I... I don't know what to say...”

“Don't say anything,” Lorenzo interrupted gently.

He reached out, his long fingers carefully picking up Emma’s cloth rabbit from the floor, handing it back to the three-year-old girl. Emma took the rabbit, clutching it tightly against her small chest, giving Lorenzo a tiny, shy nod.

Lorenzo looked at Sophia, his dark eyes filled with a warmth that hadn't existed in his soul for three long, dark years.

“I built this house to be a fortress,” Lorenzo confessed, his voice echoing softly against the marble walls. “I thought walls, money, and guards could protect my daughter. But I was wrong. The only thing that kept her safe today... was the love and courage of your daughter.”

Isabella wiped her tears with her sleeve, looking up at her father. “Papa... can Emma and Sophia stay forever? Please?”

Lorenzo looked at his daughter, then at Emma, and finally at Sophia. A rare, breathtaking smile broke across his handsome face.

“They aren't going anywhere, Isabella,” Lorenzo promised softly. “From today, this isn't just my house. It’s our home.”
