Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Shadow

Over the next three weeks, the cold, gloomy limestone mansion on Long Island’s North Shore transformed in ways no one could have anticipated.
Laughter—bright, childish, and ringing—echoed through the grand marble hallways.
Isabella and Emma were inseparable. Despite their two-year age gap, the shared bond of their fragile hearts created an instant, unbreakable sisterhood. They played in the expansive rose gardens, drew colorful pictures with crayons on the terrace, and spent afternoons whispering secrets inside Elena’s preserved library.
Sophia worked tirelessly, keeping Isabella’s room spotless, monitoring their play times, and ensuring both girls received their precise dosages of medication at noon and six.
Lorenzo found himself coming home earlier from his Manhattan office. The man who used to spend his evenings reviewing syndicate ledger books and weapon shipments now spent his afternoons sitting on the back patio, watching through the glass doors as two little girls built fortresses out of sofa cushions.
However, in the shadows of the mansion, venom was brewing.
In the formal drawing room, Vivian Bellini sat across from Vincent Russo, Lorenzo’s chief of security and personal right-hand man.
Vincent was a sharp-featured man of thirty-five, wearing a sharp suit, his eyes cold and ambitious. He had served the Moretti family for a decade, but his loyalty was not born of love—it was born of greed.
“He's soft, Vincent,” Vivian hissed, swirling a glass of white wine in her hand. “Look at him! The head of the Moretti syndicate is letting a penniless servant and her bastard child run wild through this house!”
“The boss is attached to the girl because she makes Isabella happy,” Vincent replied quietly, standing near the window, watching Sophia gather laundry in the courtyard below. “It’s a distraction.”
“It's a threat!” Vivian snapped, slamming her glass onto the glass table. “My father and I have invested millions into this partnership! Lorenzo was supposed to announce our engagement at the summer gala next month! Once we marry, my family gets the shipping routes, and I control the Moretti trust fund!”
Vivian stood up, stepping closer to Vincent, her voice dropping into a dark whisper.
“If that maid stays here, Lorenzo will never marry me. He looks at Sophia like she’s a saint. He looks at that little girl like she’s his own daughter. If they stay, my father will pull his political protection from the syndicate, and you... you will remain Lorenzo’s glorified lapdog forever.”
Vincent’s jaw twitched. “What are you proposing, Vivian?”
Vivian pulled a small, velvet-lined pouch from her designer handbag and tossed it onto the sofa.
Inside were four sealed glass bottles of Isabella’s specialized, life-saving heart medication—a custom synthesis worth fifty thousand dollars a bottle, imported directly from a private laboratory in Switzerland.
“Without these pills, Isabella goes into cardiac arrest within forty-eight hours,” Vivian whispered, her eyes flashing with sinister intent. “If these bottles vanish from the medical safe, and if they happen to be found in that maid’s possession... Lorenzo won't just fire her. He will ruin her.”

Vincent looked at the glass bottles. “And the child?”
Vivian smiled—a cold, ruthless smile that held no human warmth. “Sophia Carter will go to prison for grand theft and attempted murder of an heiress. And Lorenzo will come crawling back to me to save his daughter's life.”
