Chapter 6 - The White Cactus Flower

A year later, the spring sun bathed the Maple Ridge Public Library in a warm, golden light.

Claire stood by the window of her newly renovated archive department. She had been promoted to Head Director of Regional Archives, a position that came with a beautiful salary and creative freedom.

She looked down at the windowsill. The cactus she had tended to for so many years was thriving, and right at the center of its green thorns, another brilliant, milk-white flower had bloomed.

"I told you," a warm, deep voice said from the doorway.

Claire turned around to see David Vance—Diana's brother, a kind-hearted, handsome landscape architect who had helped Claire redesign her parents' garden into a serene sensory retreat for Eleanor. Over the past six months, David had become a steady, gentle presence in Claire’s life, offering a quiet, respectful love she had never known existed.

He walked into the room, carrying a small cup of her favorite hazelnut coffee.

"A white cactus flower," David smiled, looking at the blossom. "What did your coworker say it meant again?"

"New love, new money, or a baby girl," Claire laughed, taking the coffee. "Well, I got the promotion, and I definitely don't think I'm having a baby girl at forty-four."

David stepped closer, his warm gray eyes filled with a deep, unmistakable devotion. He reached out, his fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"Then I guess that leaves the new love," David said softly.

Claire smiled, her heart filling with a profound, beautiful peace. She looked at her reflection in the glass window—unbroken, radiant, and completely whole. The storm of betrayal had cleared, leaving behind a life more beautiful than she had ever dared to dream.

"Yes," Claire whispered, leaning into his touch as the afternoon sun warmed the room. "I think it does."
