Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at Northgate

On Friday morning, the rain poured over Maple Ridge, matching the stormy tension building inside the executive boardroom of Northgate Neurology Center.
Dr. Vanessa Cole sat at the head of the long mahogany table, her knuckles white as she gripped a pen. Mark stood behind her, looking nervous, his eyes darting to the door.
"It's just a simple signature, Vanessa," Mark whispered. "We give Claire the notarized ledger, the bank releases the final $20,000, and we pack our bags. The audit of your partnership sale is next week. We need to close this loop now."
"I don't like it," Vanessa hissed. "Claire is an archivist. She deals with documents for a living. What if she notices the billing codes don't match the national registry?"
Before Mark could answer, the boardroom door opened.
Claire walked in, dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit she hadn't worn in years. Beside her was Diana Vance, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.
Vanessa immediately smoothed her expression, offering a patronizing, clinical smile. "Claire, dear. Mark told me about the bank's administrative hiccup. I have the notarized ledger right here. There's no need to worry."
Claire didn't sit down. She stood at the opposite end of the table, looking at the two of them with an icy calm that made Mark’s stomach drop.
"I'm not here for the ledger, Vanessa," Claire said quietly.
She opened her purse, pulled out three secure flash drives, and tossed them onto the table. They landed with a sharp clack.
"What is this?" Mark asked, frowning.
"That," Diana Vance spoke up, stepping forward, "is a comprehensive digital dossier containing the original, unedited MRI scans of a patient who died three years ago, which Dr. Cole modified to fake Mark's diagnosis. It also contains the complete transaction history of the $100,000 you've already transferred into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under both your names."
Vanessa’s face went completely ash-gray. She stood up so fast her chair screeched against the hardwood floor. "This is slander! I will have you disbarred!"
"And these," Claire continued, tapping her phone screen, "are the photos of the two of you at the Whispering Pines Resort last week, along with six months of text messages detailing your plan to defraud me, steal my parents' house, and abandon Eleanor."
Mark took a step back, his breath catching. "Claire... sweetheart, listen to me. It's not what it looks like. I was... I was confused. The medication—"
"Shut up, Mark," Claire said, her voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "You aren't sick. You've never been sick. You're just a parasite who chose the wrong host."
Diana Vance opened her briefcase and pulled out a stack of legal documents, sliding them across the table.
"Here are our terms," Diana said. "Option A: You sign these immediate, unconditional transfer deeds. Mark relinquishes all claims to the house, all marital assets, and signs over his entire share of his father's estate to his mother, Eleanor. Additionally, Dr. Cole will personally wire $120,000 to Claire’s account by 5:00 PM today to fully pay off the bank loan."
Vanessa gasped. "That's extortion!"
"Option B," Diana smiled coldly. "I press play on this laptop, which is currently connected to a live-stream call with the State Medical Board, the District Attorney’s fraud division, and the lead acquisition auditor of the conglomerate buying your clinic. If I press this button, Vanessa, you lose your license, your clinic, and you both spend the next ten years in a state penitentiary."
The boardroom became deathly quiet, save for the sound of the rain beating against the glass.
Mark looked at Vanessa, his eyes pleading. "Vanessa... sign it. Please. I can't go to prison."
Vanessa looked at Mark with pure disgust. The "love of her life" was suddenly nothing more than a liability. With a shaking hand, she grabbed the pen and signed her name on the settlement documents. Mark followed suit, his hand trembling so violently he nearly tore the paper.
Claire picked up the signed documents, checked the signatures, and slipped them into her folder.

"By 5:00 PM," Claire said to Vanessa. "Or the DA gets the files anyway."
She turned and walked out of the boardroom, leaving the two betrayers to tear each other apart in the ruins of their greed.
