Chapter 3 - The Trap is Baited

The next morning, Claire visited a prominent divorce attorney downtown, a sharp-witted woman named Diana Vance.

Diana reviewed the MRI files, the bank transfers, and the photos Claire had compiled. A slow, dangerous smile spread across the attorney's face.

"This isn't just a divorce, Claire," Diana said, leaning back in her leather chair. "This is criminal fraud, embezzlement, and medical malpractice. Dr. Vanessa Cole used her clinical license to fabricate medical records to secure a loan under false pretenses. Your husband was a co-conspirator to defraud his own wife."

"Can I get my house back?" Claire asked, her voice tight. "The mortgage is in my name. If I default, the bank takes my parents' home."

"If we file for standard divorce now, Mark's lawyers will tie up your assets for years, and the bank will foreclose," Diana warned. "We need them to admit to the fraud on the record. We need to bait the trap so sweet that they walk right into it themselves."

"How?"

Diana leaned forward. "Vanessa Cole’s clinic is currently undergoing a private investment audit. She’s trying to sell a partnership share of Northgate Neurology to a larger medical conglomerate. If a whisper of malpractice or fraud gets out, her career is dead, and the deal collapses. We are going to offer them a way out—one that strips Mark of everything."

That evening, Claire initiated Phase One.

While Mark was in the shower, she used a specialized backup software she had downloaded to mirror his phone. Within minutes, she had access to his entire chat history with Vanessa.

The messages were sickening.

“Just a few more weeks, Markie,” Vanessa had written. “Once the final $20,000 installment of the loan clears, we’ll buy the cottage in Maine. Let Claire keep the stroke-addled mother and the debt. She’s too stupid to ever figure it out.”

Mark’s reply made Claire’s blood run cold: “I can’t wait to leave this dump. She actually believes I’m dying. It’s almost sad how easy she is to fool.”

Claire quietly saved the screenshots.

When Mark came out of the bathroom, Claire was sitting at the kitchen table, looking distraught. She had several official-looking bank letters spread out in front of her.

"Mark," she said, her voice trembling with simulated panic. "We have a major problem."

Mark paused, his towel around his neck. "What is it?"

"The bank... they're calling in the loan. They said there's an irregularity with the medical collateral. They want to audit Northgate Neurology's treatment ledger before they release the final $20,000."

Mark’s face went entirely pale. "They... they want to audit Vanessa’s clinic?"

"Yes," Claire sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "They said if we can't provide the certified, notarized treatment logs by Friday, they'll freeze our accounts and launch a formal investigation into medical billing fraud. Mark, what are we going to do? If they investigate, they might stop your treatments!"

Mark’s panic was almost comical. He immediately grabbed his phone. "I... I'll call Vanessa. She'll handle the paperwork. Don't worry, Claire. Just... don't call the bank back yet. Let me talk to her."

He rushed out of the room, entirely unaware that he was running straight into the jaws of the trap.
