Chapter 7 - A Brand New Sky

One year later.

The community art center in downtown Portland was filled with the soft hum of chatter, the clinking of glasses, and the warm glow of track lighting. Hanging on the main gallery wall was a collection of beautiful, vibrant watercolor paintings depicting scenes of nature, family, and hope.

In the center of the exhibit was a beautifully restored wooden frame. Inside it was a drawing of a young girl standing on a high cliff, looking out over a golden, sunlit ocean. The crack that had once split the paper down the middle had been carefully repaired, filled with delicate gold leaf—an art technique known as Kintsugi, where broken things are made even more beautiful than before.

"It looks perfect, Chloe," I said, wrapping my arm around my now thirteen-year-old daughter's shoulders.

Chloe grinned, her eyes sparkling with confidence and joy. She looked healthy, happy, and taller than she had a year ago. "Thanks, Mom. Dad helped me glue the frame back together."

Lucas walked up beside us, holding a tray of small appetizers and a glass of sparkling apple cider for Chloe. He looked at the painting, then at his daughter, his eyes filled with a pride so deep it made my heart swell.

"You're the star of the show, kiddo," Lucas smiled, kissing the top of her head.

We had completely cut all ties with Evelyn and Kimberly. Evelyn had spent the last year serving a suspended sentence and paying massive fines for tax fraud and forgery, while Kimberly’s luxury SUV had been repossessed, forcing her and her husband to move into a tiny, cheap apartment far away from Silver Creek. They were gone from our lives, written out like a bad draft of a story that was finally finished.

As the gallery director walked over to congratulate Chloe on selling her first three paintings, I took Lucas’s hand, squeezing it gently.

We had saved our daughter’s room. We had saved her childhood. But most importantly, we had built a home where the walls were held together by love, trust, and a truth that no one could ever tear down.
