Chapter 3 - The Parasites Exposed
Kimberly’s face twisted into an ugly, desperate mask. "Lucas! How could you do this? I’m your sister! I’m pregnant, and my husband’s business is failing. You told us we could stay in the guest room, but the baby needs a nursery! Sarah’s daughter can just sleep on the pull-out couch. She's twelve! She doesn't need a whole room to herself!"
"My daughter," I spoke up, stepping forward and placing a firm hand on Lucas’s arm, "will never sleep on a couch in her own home so your child can have her room. And as of right now, neither of you is staying in our guest room either."
Evelyn’s eyes flared with a desperate, familiar anger. "You can't kick us out, Sarah! Lucas is my son! He has a moral obligation to take care of me and his sister! Lucas, tell her! Tell her you won't let her throw your own mother onto the street!"
"My mother died to me the second she put my daughter’s drawings in a trash box," Lucas said, his voice cracking with an emotion he had kept bottled up for years. "For ten years, Mom, I have carried you. I paid off your credit cards. I paid the rent on Kimberly's townhome. I bought her husband his delivery truck. And how did you repay my wife and daughter? By treating them like second-class citizens in their own home the moment my back was turned."
Lucas reached back into his briefcase and pulled out a second set of documents from the blue folder.
"And don't think I don't know what you've been doing behind my back," Lucas added, tossing a bank statement onto the table. "You forged my signature on a co-signer agreement for Kimberly's new luxury SUV last month. You took ten thousand dollars out of the joint account I set up to help with your medical bills and transferred it directly to Kimberly’s nursery decorator."
Kimberly went completely silent, her eyes darting toward the door.

"Lucas, I can explain—" Evelyn stammered, her face turning a sickly shade of grey.
"You don't need to explain anything to me," Lucas said. "But you will have to explain it to the police."
