Chapter 4 - The Eviction of the Grifters

"The police?" Evelyn gasped, clutching her chest. "You would arrest your own mother? For a few thousand dollars? After everything I did for you?"

"You didn't do anything for me, Mom," Lucas said. "You used me as an ATM. And now, the bank is closed."

I turned to the entryway, where the two movers Evelyn had hired were standing awkwardly by the open door, holding a roll of bubble wrap. They had heard every single word of the confrontation.

"Gentlemen," I said, my voice clear and calm. "The move is canceled. However, if you want to make an extra two hundred dollars each, I have a different job for you."

The lead mover looked at me, then at the pale, trembling Evelyn. "What's the job, ma'am?"

"Take those cardboard boxes, go into our guest bedroom, pack up every single item belonging to my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, and load them into your truck," I said. "Then, you can drive them to Kimberly’s townhome and dump them on her driveway."

"You can't do that!" Kimberly shrieked. "All my baby gear is in that guest room! The crib, the stroller—"

"Pack it all," I told the movers. "And if they refuse to leave, call the building's security. They are already waiting downstairs."

Evelyn looked at Lucas, waiting for him to object, to soften, to play the dutiful son she had manipulated for decades. But Lucas simply turned his back on her, walking over to Chloe and kneeling down to her eye level.

"I'm so sorry, sweetie," Lucas whispered, gently brushing a tear from Chloe's cheek. "Daddy is here now. Nobody is taking your room. Nobody is touching your drawings ever again."
