Chapter 3 - The Audit of Blood

The next morning, the financial district woke up to a bloodbath.
The headlines on every major business network were relentless: "Aegis Global Purges Executive Leadership Overnight; Senior VPs Fired Amid Allegations of Massive Corporate Embezzlement." On Facebook, the corporate announcement post had accumulated three hundred thousand comments in less than two hours. The public was desperate to know who the mysterious founder was—the shadowy figure who had operated in total silence for a decade, only to emerge and completely annihilate the city’s most arrogant dynasty in a single night.
I spent the morning in the penthouse boardroom, wrapped in a comfortable silk robe, watching the sunrise over the city skyline. My legal team had spent the night pulling every single thread of the Harrington family’s financial footprint.
"It's worse than we thought, Brooke," Lawrence said, placing a thick dossier on the glass table. "Connor didn't just abuse his corporate expense accounts. When he realized you were pregnant and filed for divorce, he used his position as COO to transfer five million dollars of Aegis development capital into an offshore shell company registered in his new girlfriend’s name—Tiffany Vance."
I narrowed my eyes. "He tried to hide my daughter's future inheritance in his mistress's bank account."
"Exactly. He thought that because you signed the standard divorce settlement—the one where he gave you a pathetic fifty thousand dollars as a 'parting gift'—that you were out of the picture. He had no idea the company he was stealing from belonged entirely to the woman he just discarded."
"Where are they now?" I asked, my voice dropping into a deadly, quiet register.
"They’re currently sitting in the lobby downstairs," Lawrence replied, checking his watch. "They’ve been there since 6:00 AM. They’re begging for an audience with the anonymous 'Director Cole.' They still don't realize that Director Cole is the woman they drenched with dirty water last night."
"Bring them up," I commanded. "But tell security to make them wait in the hallway for exactly forty-five minutes. I want them to think about every single choice that brought them to this floor."
Forty-five minutes later, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Connor and Evelyn rushed in, looking completely disheveled. Connor’s suit was wrinkled, his tie missing, his eyes bloodshot from a lack of sleep. Evelyn looked haggard, her expensive jewelry gone, her hands shaking as she clutched her purse. Tiffany followed behind them, looking like a scared rabbit, completely stripped of her high-society arrogance.
They ran toward the massive leather chair at the end of the table, which was turned toward the window, obscuring my face.
"Director Cole!" Connor gasped, collapsing onto his knees near the table. "Please! You have to listen to me! There’s been a massive misunderstanding in the system! The automated Protocol 7 lock—it’s destroying our lives! My mother’s accounts are frozen, our house is locked, and the banks are threatening foreclosure! We’ve given our lives to this company!"
"We built your brand, Director!" Evelyn wept, her voice cracking with desperation. "Please, show some mercy. We are a good, respectable family. We made one mistake with an internal expense log, but we can pay it back! Just don't ruin us!"
I slowly spun the leather chair around to face them.
The moment my face came into view, the entire room fell into a terrifying, paralyzed silence.
Connor’s jaw literally dropped. He blinked once, twice, his brain completely short-circuiting as he stared at the woman sitting in the founder's chair. The woman wearing a multi-million-dollar diamond watch, surrounded by the top corporate lawyers in the country.

"Brooke...?" Connor whispered, his voice cracking. "What... what are you doing in that chair? Get down before security sees you! You can't be up here!"
"I am security, Connor," I said, leaning forward and resting my chin on my hands. "And this is my chair. I bought it. I bought the building it’s sitting in. And I bought the career you just flushed down the toilet."
