Chapter 2 - The Shockwave

Within ten minutes of my departure, the Harrington estate became ground zero for the largest corporate collapse in the city's history.
I sat in the back of the armored Maybach, watching the mansion fade into the distance through the rain-streaked window. Beside me, Lawrence, the Executive Vice President of Legal, was reviewing a digital ledger on his tablet. His face was grim, but there was a flicker of deep satisfaction in his eyes.
"The board is in absolute chaos, Brooke," Lawrence said, handing me a warm cup of herbal tea. "The moment the system flagged the activation of Protocol 7, the automated algorithm began liquidating every single asset tied to the Harrington name. Because their employment contracts were contingent on a 'moral character' clause tied directly to the founder's discretion, their termination was instantaneous."
"And the funding?" I asked, taking a slow sip.
"Cut off at the root. The mansion they're sitting in? It’s not owned by Connor. It’s owned by a real estate subsidiary of Aegis Global. As of midnight tonight, they are legally trespassing on corporate property. The eviction notices have already been generated by the system."
I leaned back against the leather seat, closing my eyes. For years, I had kept my identity a secret because I wanted to believe Connor loved me for me. I had met him when Aegis was just a rising tech startup, hiding my wealth behind a modest facade to see if his heart was genuine. But the moment his family achieved wealth through their executive positions at my firm, the greed consumed them. When I got pregnant, instead of celebrating, they treated me like an anchor dragging down their social status. They forced a divorce, leaving me with nothing but the clothes on my back—or so they thought.
Meanwhile, back at the mansion, Connor was losing his mind.
He didn't wait for morning. He drove straight to the Aegis Global headquarters, speeding through the rainy streets, desperate to find a glitch in the system. Evelyn was right behind him in her Mercedes, her hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles were white.
When they arrived at the towering glass skyscraper in the financial district, the glass doors—doors they usually walked through like royalty—refused to slide open.
Connor slammed his executive gold keycard against the electronic scanner.
Access Denied. The red light blinked like a mocking eye.
"Open the door!" Connor screamed, pounding his fist against the reinforced glass. The security guard inside, a man Connor had threatened to fire just last week for not holding the elevator, looked at him with complete indifference.
"Mr. Harrington," the guard’s voice came through the external intercom. "Your employment with Aegis Global has been terminated. You are no longer permitted on the premises. If you do not leave the property immediately, we will have you removed for criminal trespass."
"Do you know who I am?!" Evelyn shrieked, pushing Connor aside and glaring into the security camera. "I am the face of this company's PR! I command the media!"
"Not anymore, Mrs. Harrington," a smooth, cold voice spoke from behind them.
Evelyn and Connor spun around. Standing under the grand awning was Clara Hastings, the Chief Financial Officer and my closest confidante. She held a sleek silver briefcase, flanked by two corporate attorneys.
"As of five minutes ago, the board approved an emergency restructuring," Clara said, looking down her nose at the shivering mother and son. "Every press release issued over the last forty-eight hours has been scrubbed. The media doesn't know who you are anymore, Evelyn. But they are about to find out about the three million dollars in unauthorized corporate expenses you channeled into your private boutique accounts over the last fiscal year."

Evelyn’s breath hitched. Her face went entirely white. "That... those were approved business expenses! Connor signed off on them!"
"Connor was the Chief Operating Officer," Clara smiled, a dangerous, predatory expression. "But he wasn't the owner. And the owner just called for an audit."
