Chapter 1 - The Code Word

The heavy oak doors of the Harrington estate didn't just open—they slammed against the wall with the weight of absolute authority.

Connor didn't even have time to finish his smirk. His new girlfriend, a high-society social climber named Tiffany, was still mid-giggle, pointing at my soaked clothes. But the laughter died in her throat as six men in tailored charcoal suits marched into the dining room. They weren't standard police officers. They were the executive security detail from the corporate headquarters of Aegis Global—the multi-billion-dollar parent company that funded every single luxury the Harrington family enjoyed.

At the front of the line was Marcus Vance, the chief of global security. A man who usually only appeared when international heads of state visited the firm.

"What is the meaning of this?" Evelyn, my ex-mother-in-law, snapped, her voice shrill as she stood up from the head of the table. "Marcus? Why are you breaking into my home? Do you know who I am? I am the Senior Vice President of Public Relations at Aegis! I can have your job by morning!"

Marcus didn't look at her. He didn't even acknowledge her existence. He walked straight past the expensive crystal chandeliers, bypassed Connor entirely, and stopped exactly two inches away from where I sat, drenched and dripping on the Persian rug.

Then, he bowed. Deeply. From the waist.

"Director Cole," Marcus said, his voice echoing through the silent, suffocating room. "Protocol 7 has been successfully initiated. The perimeter is secure. The corporate extraction team is waiting outside. We are ready to execute the structural termination."

Connor’s fork clattered against his porcelain plate. The sound was deafening.

"Director... Cole?" Connor stammered, his face turning a sickly shade of gray. He looked from Marcus to me, his chest heaving as he tried to process the words. "Marcus, you’re confused. This is Brooke. She’s my ex-wife. She’s a freelance secretary. She doesn't even have a college degree!"

"Silence," Marcus barked, turning a gaze so cold on Connor that the younger man physically flinched. "You are speaking to the founder, majority shareholder, and ultimate authority of Aegis Global. And as of sixty seconds ago, your security clearances have been permanently revoked."

I stood up. The dirty, icy water Evelyn had poured over my head was still dripping from my hair, but I didn't feel cold anymore. I felt like iron. I placed a hand over my stomach, feeling my baby girl calm down inside me. She knew the danger was over. The predator was no longer at the gate; we were the ones holding the keys.

"Brooke..." Evelyn whispered, her aristocratic poise completely disintegrating. She grabbed the edge of the table, her manicured nails digging into the mahogany. "This is a joke. A sick, twisted prank because we divorced you. Connor, tell me this is a joke!"

"It's no joke, Evelyn," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it carried the precise, razor-sharp clarity of a woman who had built an empire from nothing while they were busy spending its dividends. "For four years, you told me I was a burden. You told me I was lucky your son brought me into this house. You made me clean your floors, cook your meals, and endure your insults because you thought I had nowhere else to go."

I stepped forward, my wet shoes leaving dark, heavy prints on the rug. I stopped right in front of Tiffany, who was trying to hide behind Connor’s shoulder.

"You wanted an old towel, Tiffany?" I asked softly.

Tiffany couldn't speak. She was shaking so violently her diamond earrings clicked against her jaw.

"Let's see who needs the towel now," I whispered.

Right on cue, Connor’s personal phone began to explode with notifications. Then Evelyn’s phone. Then the house line. The synchronized chiming sounded like a countdown to an execution.

Connor snatched his phone off the table, his thumb flying across the screen. "No... no, no, no. This is impossible. My stock options... they're gone. My corporate accounts are locked! The bank says my assets are under federal review!"

"That’s Protocol 7, Connor," I said, turning my back on them as Marcus wrapped a pristine, dry cashmere coat around my shoulders. "It means the ghost in the machine just woke up. And she’s evicting the tenants."
