Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Parasites

Three weeks later, the reality of their destruction fully hit my family.

Without my financial support, their house of cards completely collapsed. Mark was fired from his job at an architectural firm after his employer learned of his arrest and felony charges for criminal endangerment. Chloe received an official court notice executing her eviction from my Park Slope brownstone, forcing her to move her belongings into a small, run-down rented basement in Queens.

One afternoon, while Maya was resting comfortably at home—surrounded by private nursing staff I had hired—Julian and I met with Eleanor’s defense attorney in a private conference room at the district attorney’s office.

Eleanor was brought in wearing an orange jumpsuit, her hair unkempt, her former arrogance completely shattered. Chloe sat beside her, looking pale and exhausted.

“David…” Eleanor sobbed as soon as she saw me. “Look at what you’re doing to your mother! I raised you! I sacrificed everything for you! How can you destroy your own blood for that girl?”

I sat down across from her, my expression unreadable.

“You didn't sacrifice anything for me, Eleanor,” I said quietly, pulling out a thick manila folder and placing it on the table. “Over the past three weeks, Julian conducted a full forensic audit of my personal accounts for the past five years.”

Eleanor froze, her eyes darting nervously toward her attorney.

“I found out where all the money went,” I continued, opening the folder. “The $50,000 I gave you three years ago for 'emergency medical procedures'? You used it to pay off Mark’s illegal gambling debts. The $100,000 home renovation loan I granted you? You transferred it directly to Chloe’s off-shore shopping accounts. You treated me like a personal ATM while secretly despising my wife because she came from an honest, hardworking background and couldn't be bought.”

“David, please!” Chloe cried out, leaning forward. “We’re your family! Mark made a mistake! Mom made a mistake! We were just jealous… we thought you loved Maya more than us!”

“Love isn't extracted through theft and abuse, Chloe,” I replied. “You sat back and watched Maya bleed on the floor while you packed my baby’s formula into your bag. You left an eleven-day-old infant in freezing temperatures.”

The prosecutor stepped forward, tapping the documents on the table.

“The District Attorney’s office is offering a plea deal,” the prosecutor announced in a formal, unyielding tone. “Eleanor Sterling will plead guilty to felony grand larceny and third-degree criminal endangerment, serving a reduced sentence of two years in state prison. Mark Miller will plead guilty to assault and reckless endangerment, serving eighteen months. Chloe Miller will receive three years of probation, mandatory community service, and full restitution payments.”

“Two years in prison?!” Eleanor shrieked, clutching her throat. “I’m an old woman! I won't survive in prison!”

“Then you can go to trial,” Julian chimed in calmly. “With the security camera footage, the medical records, and the bank statements, a jury will convict you on all counts, carrying a maximum sentence of seven years. The choice is yours.”

Eleanor looked at her defense attorney, who simply shook his head, silently confirming that they had zero chance of winning in court.

Breaking down into hysterics, Eleanor signed the plea agreement with shaking hands.
