Chapter 3 - The Cold Reality

Back in New York, morning light filtered through the window of Maya’s hospital room.
Her fever had finally broken, thanks to the high-dosage antibiotics, and her wound had been re-stitched by a senior surgeon. Liam was resting peacefully in a warm incubator in the step-down nursery, his vital signs back to normal after receiving thermal care and proper nutrition.
Maya opened her eyes, finding me sitting by her bedside, holding her pale, thin hand.
“David…” she whispered, tears immediately overflowing her lashes. “Is Liam… is he okay?”
“Liam is safe, sweetheart,” I said, leaning down to kiss her forehead gently. “He’s warm, fed, and sleeping. And you are going to be completely fine.”
Maya burst into quiet, trembling sobs. “I’m so sorry, David. I tried to take care of him, but I couldn't walk… every time I tried to reach the stove, the pain was so bad… Your mother told me I was useless… she said if I complained to you, she would make sure you took Liam away from me…”
My grip on her hand tightened, my throat tight with sorrow and fury. “Maya, listen to me carefully. You have nothing to apologize for. You protected our son under barbaric conditions. I was a fool for ever trusting them, but I promise you, on my life, they will never step foot near you or Liam ever again.”
At that moment, Julian entered the room, carrying a thick leather briefcase. His face was dead serious.
“David, we have a major update,” Julian said softly, nodding respectfully to Maya. “The freezing orders on all joint accounts are fully in effect. The emergency custody protection order for Liam has been filed with the family court, revoking any visitation rights for Eleanor Sterling based on severe child endangerment.”
“What about the police report?” I asked.
“The precinct in Park Slope has reviewed the security footage you provided,” Julian explained. “The precinct commander was appalled. Stripping a recovering surgical patient of prescribed medication, stealing specialized infant formula, and deliberately turning off heat in freezing temperatures during an emergency recovery period isn't just family drama—it constitutes criminal negligence, reckless endangerment, and theft.”
Julian pulled out a document. “Furthermore, because Eleanor used the $14,000 you wired specifically for medical and home care to purchase luxury resort packages across state lines under false pretenses, federal wire fraud charges are on the table. NYPD is coordinating with the Miami-Dade Police Department.”
Before I could answer, my phone began vibrating frantically on the bedside table. It was an unknown number from a Florida area code.
I set the phone on speaker.
“David! David, answer me right now!” Eleanor’s screeching voice erupted through the speaker, laced with hysterics. “What is the meaning of this?! Hotel security just threw us out into the street! They locked our luggage in the hotel vault because the credit cards bounced! Chloe is crying, Mark is panicking, and we are stranded in Miami with no money!”
I stared at the phone, my voice dropping to a icy register.
“You aren't stranded, Eleanor,” I said.
There was a brief pause on the line. Eleanor’s tone instantly shifted from panic to fake indignance. “David? Is that you? Why are you speaking to me like that? Did that manipulative snake Maya get to you? She’s lying to you, David! We came to Florida for a brief medical rest because the stress she caused was ruining my health! She’s playing the victim!”
“I am sitting in the hospital ward in Brooklyn, Eleanor,” I said word for word. “I am sitting right next to my wife, who had to be hospitalized for sepsis because her C-section wound ruptured while trying to crawl to the kitchen for tap water.”
Silence hung over the line, absolute and heavy.
“I was home last night,” I continued, each word delivered like a cold hammer blow. “I walked into the dark, freezing house. I saw the empty fridge. I saw the note you left. And then I checked the security cameras.”
A sharp gasp escaped Eleanor’s throat.
“I saw everything,” I said. “I saw you take Maya’s pain medicine. I saw Mark push her into the counter. I saw Chloe steal my son’s formula. I heard every disgusting word that came out of your mouth.”

“David… wait… listen to your mother…” Eleanor’s voice completely lost its composure, crumbling into frantic stammering. “It’s not what it looks like! We were just trying to teach her to be strong! She’s making you soft! David, we are your real family!”
“My family is right here in this hospital room,” I replied calmly. “Look out the front window of your resort, Eleanor. The police should be arriving right about now.”
