Chapter 2 - The Miami Mirage

While Maya was being stabilized in the intensive care ward, 1,200 miles away in South Beach, Miami, the party was in full swing.

Eleanor sat at a VIP poolside table at one of the most exclusive oceanfront resorts, sipping crystal champagne. Beside her, Chloe was taking selfies in designer swimwear purchased just yesterday, while Mark was showing off a heavy gold watch to his brother, Ethan, who had brought his entire family along for the lavish, all-expenses-paid vacation.

“To David’s hard work!” Mark raised his glass, laughing loudly over the bass of the DJ. “May he keep grinding in cold Germany so we can enjoy the Florida sun!”

“Hear, hear,” Eleanor smiled smugly, adjusting her pearl necklace. “David always was a dutiful son. He knows his place. He owes his success to the upbringing I gave him.”

Chloe glanced at her phone, scrolling through social media. “Mom, do you think Maya will actually tell him anything?”

“Tell him what?” Eleanor scoffed, taking a bite of poached lobster. “She’s weak, spineless, and terrified of me. She knows that if she utters a word, I’ll tell David she’s ungrateful and unfit to be a mother. David listens to me. He always has.”

Suddenly, Mark’s phone buzzed with an alert from his bank app. He frowned, tapping the screen.

“That’s strange,” Mark muttered. “My card just got declined for the bottle service.”

“Try the other one,” Chloe said dismissively. “David gave us three supplementary cards from his business line for 'emergencies.'”

Mark pulled out a black credit card and handed it to the waiter. A few minutes later, the waiter returned, his expression cold and polite. “I’m sorry, sir. This card has been flagged as canceled by the primary account holder. The transaction did not go through.”

“What?” Eleanor stood up, her face flushing with anger. “That’s impossible! Do you know who we are? Call your manager! My son is a high-net-worth industrial executive!”

Mark quickly logged into his online banking application, but a red notification popped up on his screen: ACCOUNT FROZEN / AUTHORIZATION REVOKED BY OWNER.

Within seconds, Chloe’s phone buzzed with the same notification. Then came an automatic alert from the luxury resort’s front desk: Notice of Immediate Payment Required. The secondary corporate card on file for Suites 801 and 802 has been revoked.

Panic began to ripple through the group.

“Did the bank flag it for fraud because we’re out of state?” Ethan asked, looking anxious.

“No,” Eleanor said, her heart doing a nervous flip, though she quickly masked it with arrogance. “David must have made a mistake at his bank. Let me call him right now.”

She dialed my number. It rang twice before going straight to voicemail. She tried again. And again. Blocked.

“He’s probably on a flight or in a meeting with the German directors,” Chloe said, trying to reassure herself, though her hands were shaking. “He’ll fix it as soon as he lands.”

At that moment, two uniform-clad hotel security officers, accompanied by the resort manager, approached their table.

“Mr. and Mrs. Miller?” the manager asked, looking strictly at Mark and Chloe. “Your stay was backed by an authorized secondary card belonging to Mr. David Sterling. We have just received an official revocation of consent from Mr. Sterling’s legal representation, along with a notice that any further charges on this account will be prosecuted as grand larceny. You have unpaid incidental charges amounting to $18,400. You must settle this bill immediately, or we will be forced to contact the local authorities.”

Eleanor’s face drained of color. “Grand larceny?! How dare you! This is a misunderstanding! David is my son!”

“Ma’am,” the manager replied coldly. “You have thirty minutes to settle the bill and vacate the premises.”
