Chapter 4 - THE BROOKLYN TRAP

By morning, the Moretti estate was fully mobilized for war.

Carlo had been forced to surrender every contact number, private frequency, and meeting location for Julian Donati’s syndicate. The threat against my life and Alessandro’s empire had reached its critical tipping point.

At 9:00 AM, Alessandro met with Marco and his top lieutenants in the tactical war room beneath the mansion. I stood near the door, holding a sleepy Lily in my arms, watching the men plot their next move.

“Julian Donati believes Carlo successfully planted the tracker inside the estate main server last night,” Marco explained, pointing to a digital map of Brooklyn on a large wall monitor. “He’s expecting Carlo to meet him at an abandoned warehouse near the Red Hook piers at midnight tonight to exchange the master codes for five million in cash.”

“Is Richard Miller going to be there?” I asked, my voice steady despite the fear in my heart.

Marco looked at Alessandro, who gave a brief nod.

“Yes, Grace,” Marco said gently. “Our wiretaps confirmed Richard is currently hiding in a safehouse near Red Hook. He’s scheduled to fly out to Colombia tomorrow morning on a private charter using fake passport papers provided by Donati.”

A cold resolve settled into my blood. My ex-husband was going to escape scott-free while my daughter and I were left to pick up the pieces of a ruined life.

Alessandro stood up from the head of the conference table. He adjusted the cuffs of his black suit jacket, his dark eyes locked onto mine.

“We go to Brooklyn tonight,” Alessandro stated, his voice commanding absolute silence in the room. “We end the Donati threat permanently. And Richard Miller will answer for what he did to his family.”

“Alessandro, wait,” I said, stepping forward. “It’s too dangerous! Donati knows Carlo’s voice. If anything goes wrong—”

Alessandro walked over to me, stopping inches away. He looked down at Lily, who was clutching a stuffed bear Alessandro had ordered brought up from his late wife’s nursery collection. Then his eyes met mine, glowing with an intense, fierce protection.

“Grace,” Alessandro said softly, placing his hand over mine. “For four years, I lived in this house like a ghost. I built walls to keep the world out because I thought I had nothing left to protect. But yesterday, your daughter sat on my chest and woke me up.”

My breath caught in my throat.

“I am not going to Brooklyn just to defend my business,” Alessandro continued, his voice trembling with rare, profound emotion. “I am going to make sure that no man ever threatens you or Lily again. You gave me a reason to live again, Grace. Let me give you a future.”

I stared into his dark eyes, feeling a wave of intense warmth and love crash over my heart. In just forty-eight hours, this powerful, dangerous man had become our protector, our anchor, and the keeper of my soul.

“Come back to us,” I whispered softly, reaching up to gently touch his cheek. “Promise me you’ll come back.”

Alessandro leaned into my touch, closing his eyes for a brief, beautiful second. “I promise.”

At 10:00 PM that night, a convoy of four black armored SUVs quietly exited the iron gates of the Moretti estate, heading south toward New York City.

I stayed in the third-floor suite with three of Alessandro’s most trusted personal guards posted outside my door. I sat by the balcony window, clutching Lily’s small hand as she slept, watching the dark sky, praying with every fiber of my being for Alessandro’s safe return.

Meanwhile, in the cold, damp shadows of the Red Hook piers in Brooklyn, the trap was being sprung.

The abandoned naval warehouse smelled of salt water, rust, and old gasoline.

Julian Donati—a arrogant, thirty-two-year-old mobster dressed in a designer leather jacket—stood near a black sedan alongside four heavily armed mercenaries. Beside him stood Richard Miller, my ex-husband, looking pale, twitchy, and sweating profusely as he clutched a leather duffel bag.

“Where the hell is Carlo?!” Richard whined, looking at his watch nervously. “He was supposed to be here twenty minutes ago! The plane leaves at six AM, Julian!”

“Shut up, Richard!” Julian snapped, flicking his cigarette onto the wet concrete. “Carlo’s coming. He had to make sure Moretti’s perimeter guards didn't follow him.”

Suddenly, the heavy iron doors of the warehouse slid open with a screeching metallic groan.

A single set of headlights cut through the pitch-black interior of the warehouse. A black Mercedes sedan rolled slowly inside, coming to a stop thirty feet from Julian’s crew.

The driver’s side door opened.

Carlo Ricci stepped out into the harsh glare of the headlights. His face was bruised, his arm in a sling, and his expression entirely hollow.

“Carlo!” Julian smirked, stepping forward. “You look like hell. Did you get the master encryption drive from Moretti’s safe?”

Carlo didn't answer. He simply stood by the open car door, his eyes filled with pure terror.

“Carlo? What’s wrong with you?” Richard asked, taking a step back nervously.

“He can't answer you, Richard,” a deep, chilling voice echoed from the shadows behind the car.

The rear door of the Mercedes opened.

Alessandro Moretti stepped out into the dim light of the warehouse.
