Chapter 3 - THE BASEMENT REVELATION

At two o'clock in the morning, I couldn't sleep.

The luxury guest suite was warm and safe, but my mind was a racing storm of anxiety. I kept seeing Carlo’s cold eyes, hearing the gunshots in my memory, and worrying about what was happening in the dark depths beneath the house.

I looked at Lily, who was sound asleep, curled under the thick goose-down comforter.

I quietly slipped out of bed, put on my cardigan, and unlocked the internal deadbolt. I knew I should stay in the room, but a strange, irresistible instinct pulled me toward the hallway. I needed to know what we were up to. I needed to know if my life was truly safe.

The hallways of the mansion were eerily quiet. The emergency night lights cast long, amber shadows across the high ceilings and oil paintings.

As I walked toward the east wing, I heard low, muffled voices echoing up from the spiral stone staircase that led down into the wine cellar—and the fortified basement beneath it.

I crept down the cold stone stairs, keeping my back pressed against the curved wall, my heart hammering in my chest.

At the bottom of the cellar, behind a heavy iron security door that stood half-open, a bright halogen work light illuminated a cold concrete interrogation room.

Carlo was tied securely to a heavy wooden chair in the center of the room. His face was bruised, his silver hair wild and bloody, but his eyes were wide with terrified panic.

Alessandro sat in a leather chair ten feet away, calmly sipping a glass of bourbon while Marco stood behind Carlo with his arms crossed over his chest.

“I’ll ask you one last time, Carlo,” Alessandro’s voice echoed off the concrete walls like a thunderclap. “Who gave you the encryption codes for the safe in my office?”

Carlo spit blood onto the floor, laughing maniacally. “You think I’m going to tell you?! They’ll kill me, Alessandro! They’ll skin me alive!”

“I am the one standing in front of you, Carlo,” Alessandro said coldly, setting his glass down on a metal table. “They are miles away. Give me a name, or Marco brings out the blowtorch.”

Carlo trembled violently, his resolve completely crumbling under the threat of physical torture.

“It was Donati!” Carlo screamed, weeping pathetically. “Donati’s nephew, Julian! He paid me three million dollars to copy the master ledger from your safe! He wanted the names of all your shipping contacts in Europe!”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. “And Grace Miller? Why did you drag a helpless housekeeper and her daughter into this?”

Carlo let out a bitter, desperate laugh. “Because Grace’s missing husband... Richard Miller... didn't just abandon her, Alessandro! He’s the one who gave Julian Donati the blueprints to your estate!”

I gasped aloud, slapping my hand over my mouth.

The sound echoed slightly in the quiet cellar stairwell.

Marco’s head snapped toward the door. “Who’s there?!”

Before I could turn and run back up the stone stairs, Marco stepped out into the hallway, his handgun drawn. When the barrel illuminated my face, he immediately lowered the weapon, a look of profound surprise crossing his rugged features.

“Grace?” Marco said, stunned. “What are you doing down here?”

Alessandro stepped out of the room, his eyes instantly finding mine. He didn't look angry; he looked deeply concerned.

“Grace,” Alessandro said, stepping toward me, his heavy shoes clicking on the stone floor. “You shouldn't be down here.”

“Is it true?” I sobbed, my voice trembling as tears streamed down my face. “What Carlo said... about my husband, Richard?”

Alessandro looked at Marco, gesturing for him to go back inside and close the heavy iron door. Then he took my hands in his, his large, warm grip completely enveloping my cold, shaking fingers.

“Come upstairs,” Alessandro said gently. “I’ll tell you everything.”

We walked up to his private study on the second floor—a grand room filled with leather-bound books, a burning fireplace, and high bulletproof glass windows looking over the night grounds. He poured a small splash of brandy into a glass and handed it to me.

I sat on the leather sofa, holding the glass with trembling hands, trying to absorb the crushing weight of the truth.

“Richard didn't leave you because of money problems, Grace,” Alessandro explained quietly, leaning against the edge of his mahogany desk. “Richard was a low-level accountant for the Donati syndicate in Brooklyn. Eight months ago, he got into a massive gambling debt with Julian Donati. To clear his debt, Richard agreed to act as an insider, gathering intel on high-value targets in Kansas City and New York.”

“Oh God...” I wept, burying my face in my hands. “My entire marriage was a lie? He used me?”

“He used your clean record to get you close to this estate,” Alessandro said, his tone laced with deep empathy. “Richard was the one who gave Carlo your name. They planned to use you as a disposable scapegoat. If Carlo’s theft was discovered, they were going to plant the stolen files in your apartment and let my men handle you while Richard fled to South America with his cut.”

The sheer cruelty of my ex-husband’s betrayal tore through my chest like a physical blade. He hadn't just abandoned us; he had set me up to be murdered by the mafia to save his own skin, leaving our three-year-old daughter fatherless and marked for death.

I sobbed uncontrollably, my shoulders shaking as the grief and horror of my reality overwhelmed me.

Suddenly, a warm, powerful presence enveloped me.

Alessandro sat down beside me on the sofa. He didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, resting my head against his broad chest, holding me tightly as I wept into his linen shirt.

“You are not alone anymore, Grace,” Alessandro whispered into my hair, his strong arms holding me with incredible tenderness. “Richard is a coward. But he will never touch you or Lily again. I swear it to you.”

I clung to Alessandro’s shirt, smelling the subtle scent of cedar, expensive leather, and amber on his skin. In the midst of the darkest night of my life, inside the fortress of a feared crime boss, I felt safer than I had ever felt in my entire existence.
