Chapter 5 - The Gift of the Realm

Three weeks after the gala, the storm that had hovered over our lives finally cleared completely.

Julian Vance was held without bail, facing twenty-five years in federal prison. His pharmaceutical empire was dismantled by federal regulators, and because of my late husband’s original ownership share, the remaining legal assets were legally transferred to a trust fund created for Marcus. My three-year-old son was now officially the heir to a multi-million dollar estate.

Victor Strand and the corrupt doctors who had assisted him were all behind bars, awaiting trial for treason within the syndicate.

The Cray mansion was quiet again, but it was a different kind of quiet. It was no longer a cold, silent tomb.

Laughter filled the grand halls. Marcus’s toy cars were frequently parked on the polished marble floors of the foyer, and the kitchen staff constantly baked batch after batch of chocolate chip cookies.

It was a warm Saturday afternoon. I was sitting on a wrought-iron bench in the conservatory—the very place where everything had started—reading a book while Marcus chased butterflies through the blooming orchids.

The glass doors opened, and Dominic walked in.

He was wearing a casual gray sweater and dark jeans, looking relaxed and deeply happy. His hearing had fully recovered, and his doctors were amazed to find zero permanent nerve damage.

He sat down beside me on the bench, stretching his long legs out. He reached over and took my hand, lacing his fingers through mine.

"You're quiet today," Dominic said softly, turning his head to look at me.

"I was just thinking," I replied, leaning my head against his broad shoulder. "A month ago, I was terrified I wouldn't be able to buy milk for Marcus. I was terrified of Victor, terrified of losing my job, terrified of you."

Dominic let out a low laugh. "You were never terrified of me, Elena. You looked me in the eye the first day we met."

"Maybe a little," I smiled, looking at him. "You were very intimidating."

"And now?"

"Now I know that under that scary mafia boss exterior is a man who lets a three-year-old put stickers on his expensive leather boots."

Dominic looked down at his boots, where a neon-pink unicorn sticker was proudly displayed on the side of his Italian leather dress shoes. He smiled, completely unbothered.

"He has good artistic taste," Dominic remarked smoothly.

He pulled a small velvet box from his sweater pocket and set it on my lap.

My breath caught in my throat. I looked at the box, then up at his dark, intense eyes. "Dominic... what is this?"

"Open it," he encouraged gently.

I opened the box. Inside rested a stunning, platinum key attached to a small leather tag stamped with an address in Upper East Side Manhattan.

"What is this key to?" I asked, confused.

"It’s to a townhouse," Dominic explained, his voice turning earnest and deeply sincere. "It belonged to my family years ago. I had it fully renovated last week. It has a garden for Marcus, six bedrooms, and a top-of-the-line security system connected directly to my central network. It’s registered entirely in your name, Elena."

I stared at him, stunned. "Dominic... I can't accept a townhouse. You've already done so much for us—"

"Elena, listen to me," Dominic interrupted gently, taking both of my hands in his. "You and Marcus changed my life. You brought me back from a dark, silent hell that I thought I would never escape. You gave me back my senses, my voice, and my purpose."

He leaned closer, his face inches from mine, his dark eyes filled with a raw, undeniable emotion. "I want you to have that house so that you always know you are independent. You are never trapped here. You never have to work for anyone ever again. But..."

He paused, his thumb gently brushing across my lips.

"But what?" I whispered, my heart racing wildly.

"But I hope with all my heart that you leave the key in the drawer, and choose to stay right here with me," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a rough, vulnerable confession. "Because this mansion was just a big, empty stone box until you and Marcus walked into it. I love you, Elena. I love your strength, your kind heart, and the way you look at me. And I love that little boy as if he were my own son."

Tears of overwhelming happiness flooded my eyes. I didn't care about the townhouse. I didn't care about the wealth or the mansion. All I cared about was the wonderful, fierce, fiercely protective man sitting beside me who had shielded my child from the world.

"I don't need a townhouse in Manhattan, Dominic," I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck. "My home is wherever you are."

Dominic let out a deep breath of pure relief and pulled me tightly into his lap, burying his face in my neck as his arms wrapped around me. When he pulled back, he cupped my cheeks and kissed me—a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that sealed our future together once and for all.
