Chapter 4 - The Gala of Masks

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was illuminated in brilliant blue and gold floodlights. Hundreds of high-society elite—politicians, billionaires, mafia bosses, and corporate titans—glided up the grand stone steps in silk gowns and custom tuxedos.

Inside the grand ballroom, champagne flowed from towering crystal fountains, and a twenty-piece orchestra played soft waltzes.

At 9:00 PM, the grand heavy doors opened, and a sudden hush rippled through the crowded ballroom.

Dominic Cray walked into the room.

He looked devastatingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo that broad-shouldered frame perfectly. But it wasn't just his presence that stopped people in their tracks. It was what was missing.

He had no earplugs. He had no lip-reading assistant. He moved through the crowd with absolute, fluid grace, his sharp dark eyes taking in every detail, his head turning effortlessly toward the sound of clinking glasses and laughter.

Beside him, holding his arm, was me.

Dominic’s personal stylists had spent four hours preparing me for the night. I wore a sweeping midnight-blue silk gown with a soft velvet trim that hugged my waist and flowed behind me. My hair was styled in an elegant updo, and around my neck rested a vintage sapphire necklace from Dominic’s private family vault.

I didn't look like a housemaid. I looked like royalty.

And walking just behind us, holding the hand of Marco, was Marcus, wearing a adorable tiny tuxedo that matched Dominic's.

"Keep your head up, Elena," Dominic whispered leaning down toward my ear. His warm breath sent a shiver down my spine. "You belong here far more than these snakes do."

"I'm terrified," I admitted, clutching his forearm tightly.

"Don't be," Dominic said, his voice full of supreme confidence. "I have forty armed men surrounding this building. The police chief is sitting at table four, and he owes me three favors. Julian Vance is trapped, he just doesn't know it yet."

Across the crowded room, near a towering ice sculpture, stood Julian Vance. He was fiftyish, with sleek silver hair, a manicured beard, and a tailored white tuxedo jacket. He was holding a glass of scotch, holding court with a group of investors.

Then, Julian turned and saw Dominic.

The glass of scotch slipped from Julian’s fingers, crashing onto the marble floor and shattering into a hundred pieces. Alcohol splashed over his polished shoes, but he didn't even notice.

His face turned gray. His eyes darted frantically toward Dominic’s head, searching for the earpiece, searching for the signs of the deaf man he had spent three years manipulating.

Dominic smiled—a predatory, terrifying smile—and walked directly toward him, slicing through the crowd like a warship through calm water.

"Julian," Dominic said smoothly, his deep voice carrying clearly over the sound of the orchestra. "It’s been too long."

Julian swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he wiped them on his jacket. "Dominic... I... I heard you weren't attending tonight. I thought... I thought you were unwell."

"I was," Dominic said, stopping just two feet away. He leaned in closer, his voice dropping so only Julian could hear. "I had a tiny pest in my ear. But a very clever little boy pulled it out yesterday."

Julian’s eyes snapped toward Marcus, who was standing beside me, looking at the ice sculpture with wonder. Julian’s jaw worked silently, trying to find words, but his mind was paralyzed by sheer panic.

"You..." Julian whispered, horror dawning in his eyes. "How... how did you..."

"Did you really think a piece of cheap Swiss metal could keep me in the dark forever, Julian?" Dominic asked, his eyes turning to ice. "Did you really think you could poison my docks, steal my trade routes, and leave my friend’s widow to starve in Queens without me finding out?"

"Dominic, wait," Julian begged, taking a step backward, looking for his security detail. But Marco had already quietly stepped behind Julian, blocking his path, his heavy hand resting ominously on Julian’s shoulder. "We can talk about this! We can make a deal! Name your price!"

"My price?" Dominic echoed softly.

He gestured to me and Marcus. "My price is everything you stole. Your company, your estate, and your freedom."

Before Julian could scream for help, two plainclothes detectives stepped out from the crowd, showing official badges from the Waterfront Commission and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"Julian Vance," the lead detective said firmly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, illegal importation of unregistered narcotics, and wire fraud."

"This is absurd!" Julian yelled as the handcuffs clicked loudly over his wrists. "You have no evidence!"

"We have Victor Strand’s full signed confession," Dominic said calmly, taking a glass of champagne from a passing waiter's tray and raising it in a silent toast. "And we have three years of encrypted transaction logs from your Swiss bank accounts. Enjoy prison, Julian. I hear the acoustics are terrible."

The crowd stared in utter shock as the CEO of Vance Pharmaceuticals was dragged out of the grand ballroom in handcuffs, screaming curses at the top of his lungs.

Dominic turned back to me, setting his glass down. He looked at me with an intensity that made my heart leap into my throat.

"Are you okay?" he asked gently.

Tears of pure relief filled my eyes. For four years, I had lived under the shadow of my late husband's family, terrified, broke, and helpless. In one night, Dominic had destroyed my worst enemy and given my son back his birthright.

"I'm better than okay," I whispered, reaching up to touch his cheek. "Thank you, Dominic."

Dominic held my hand against his face, his dark eyes shining with warmth. "We're not done yet, Elena. We have one more stop to make tonight."
