Chapter 9 - The VerdictThe jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.

When the courtroom doors opened and the twelve men and women filed back into the jury box, the silence in the room was so thick you could hear the soft hum of the fluorescent lights overhead.

Vanessa stood up beside her public defender, her hands trembling so violently she had to hold onto the edge of the wooden table.

Judge Thorne looked at the jury foreman. "Has the jury reached a unanimous verdict?"

"We have, Your Honor," the foreman, a stern-faced man in his fifties, announced clearly.

He handed the written verdict form to the bailiff, who passed it up to the judge. Judge Thorne read the paper silently, nodded, and looked down at Vanessa.

"Will the defendant please stand and face the jury."

Vanessa took a shaky breath, stepping forward.

"On Count One: Felony Child Abuse resulting in Great Bodily Harm, how do you find?"

"Guilty," the foreman announced.

My mother let out a muffled sob in the gallery.

"On Count Two: Assault with a Deadly Weapon, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

"On Count Three: Evidence Tampering, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

Guilty on every single count.

Vanessa’s knees buckled. She collapsed into her chair, burying her face in her hands, letting out a loud, pathetic wail that echoed through the courtroom.

My father sat frozen, staring blankly at the floor, his entire life’s work, status, and family legacy completely annihilated in a single sentence.

Judge Thorne did not wait for a separate sentencing hearing date. Given the extreme severity of the crime and the overwhelming evidence, he proceeded directly to sentencing under state mandatory guidelines.

"Vanessa Vance," Judge Thorne said, his voice dripping with absolute condemnation. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed an act of domestic cruelty as senseless, cowardly, and horrific as the one you committed against an innocent six-year-old child over a piece of dessert. What is even more appalling is the total lack of remorse you have displayed throughout these proceedings."

He looked over at my parents in the gallery.

"You were raised in an environment where wealth and enablement shielded you from the consequences of your violence. That enablement ends today."

He struck his gavel down with an explosive BAM!

"On Count One, I sentence you to fifteen years in the state penitentiary. On Count Two, five years, to run consecutively. You will serve a total of TWENTY YEARS in state custody, with no possibility of parole for the first fifteen years."

"NOOOOO!" Vanessa shrieked, struggling frantically as three court bailiffs stepped forward, pulled her arms behind her back, and slapped heavy iron chains around her wrists and ankles. "MOMMY! DAD! SAVE ME! DON'T LET THEM TAKE ME!"

My mother tried to rush toward the defense railing, but an officer firmly intercepted her. "Sit down, ma'am!"

As the guards dragged a screaming, sobbing Vanessa through the heavy metal door leading to the state prison transport, she looked at me one last time. In her eyes, I saw no more anger, no more arrogance—only the terrifying realization that she was finally going to pay for every tear she had ever forced another person to shed.

I stood up, took a deep breath of clean air, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun.
