Chapter 7 - The UnravelingThe fallout from the federal investigation was swift, brutal, and utterly public.

Forty-eight hours after Sarah delivered the financial documents to the FBI, federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants at my father’s corporate office, my parents’ sprawling suburban mansion, and Vanessa’s luxury downtown condo.
I watched the news on my living room television while Ruby sat beside me, happily painting a picture of a rainbow.
The live news broadcast showed federal agents carrying dozens of cardboard evidence boxes out of my parents’ front door. My father was shown being led down his stone driveway in handcuffs, wearing a rumpled shirt, his face buried in his chest to avoid the flashing news cameras.
The news anchor’s voice echoed through the room:
"In a shocking turn of events, Richard Vance, Senior Vice President of Crestview Financial and Treasurer of the Vance Family Foundation, has been arrested on federal charges of Wire Fraud, Money Laundering, and Embezzlement. Federal prosecutors allege that Vance diverted over $3.2 million from charitable funds over a six-year period to cover private legal settlements and personal real estate acquisitions. This arrest comes amidst the ongoing child abuse prosecution of his daughter, Vanessa Vance..."
I turned off the television.
The illusion was shattered. The grand house built on lies, threats, and stolen money had finally collapsed under the weight of its own corruption.
That afternoon, my mother called me again. But this time, she wasn't screaming. She wasn't threatening me.
She was broken.
"Chloe..." her voice was a faint, pathetic whisper through the speaker. "They took your father. They froze all our bank accounts. The house... the bank is putting a lien on the house. I don't have money for food, Chloe. I don't have money to pay Vanessa’s lawyers."
I listened to her weeping, remembering all the times I had cried in my bedroom as a child, wondering why my mother loved my abusive sister more than she loved me. I remembered the cold, terrifying whisper in my ear while Ruby lay unconscious: 'Don't go near her. Let your sister settle down.'
"Where is Vanessa’s lawyer, Mom?" I asked softly. "Why isn't Arthur helping you?"
"Arthur dropped our case this morning when the federal indictment came down!" she sobbed. "He said we’re toxic! Everyone has abandoned us! My friends won't answer my calls! The neighbors are staring at me through the windows! Chloe, please... you have to help us. You’re my daughter!"
"I was your daughter," I corrected her gently, feeling no anger, no hatred—only a vast, clean emptiness. "But you chose Vanessa. You chose her when she beat me. You chose her when she blinded Ruby. You sacrificed your grandchild for a monster, Mom. Now you have to live with the monster you created."
"Chloe, wait! Please—"

"Goodbye, Eleanor," I said, using her first name for the first time in my life.
I hung up the phone, blocked her number permanently, and went back to helping my daughter paint her rainbow.
