Chapter 5 - The Arraignment WarThe Municipal Courthouse was packed at 8:30 the following morning. Local news crews had assembled outside the stone steps after leaks from the police department revealed that a prominent corporate executive’s daughter had been arrested for a horrific act of child abuse.

I walked through the metal detectors wearing a simple black suit, accompanied by Sarah Jenkins—a fierce, relentless victim’s rights attorney whom Detective Callahan had personally recommended to me.

In the hallway outside Courtroom 3B, my parents were sitting on a velvet bench alongside Arthur Pendelton and two other high-priced defense attorneys. My mother was dressed in an expensive black dress, dabbing at her dry eyes with a lace handkerchief for the benefit of the passing reporters.

When she saw me walking toward the courtroom doors, her eyes widened slightly, expecting to see a broken, panicked woman ready to surrender.

Instead, I met her gaze with an unwavering, icy glare.

My father stood up, smoothing his Italian wool jacket, and walked over to intercept us. "Chloe. Have you come to your senses? Arthur has the amended statement ready for your signature."

Sarah Jenkins stepped directly between my father and me, flashing her bar card. "Mr. Vance, I am Sarah Jenkins, legal counsel for Chloe Miller and her daughter, Ruby. If you take one more step toward my client, I will have the bailiff arrest you immediately for witness intimidation."

My father scoffed, looking past Sarah at me. "Witness intimidation? I am her father! I am trying to save this family from utter ruin!"

"You surrendered the right to call yourself her father the moment you attempted to bribe her in a hospital room, Mr. Vance," Sarah replied coolly. "Now get out of our way."

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocating.

Vanessa was led in through a side door by two armed guards. She was wearing a beige jail jumpsuit, her hands chained to a leather belt around her waist. Her hair was unwashed, her face was blotchy from crying, and her eyes were filled with wild, animalistic terror.

When she saw our parents sitting in the front row, she let out a pathetic, whimper-like cry. "Mommy... Dad... get me out of here! Please! It smells terrible in there!"

"Silence in the court!" the bailiff called out as Judge Raymond Thorne, a gray-haired judge known for his zero-tolerance policy on violent crimes, stepped up to the bench.

"We are here for the arraignment of State v. Vanessa Vance," Judge Thorne announced, reviewing the thick case file before him. "Charges include Felony Child Abuse resulting in Great Bodily Harm, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and Tampering with Evidence. How does the defendant plead?"

Arthur Pendelton stood up, bowing slightly. "Your Honor, my client pleads not guilty. This is a tragic, deeply unfortunate domestic accident involving a blended family dynamic. My client was merely attempting to correct a child’s behavior when the child slipped on a wet floor and struck the table. We ask for immediate release on personal recognizance or a modest bail."

Judge Thorne raised an eyebrow. "A tragic accident, Mr. Pendelton? The medical report from the pediatric trauma unit indicates that the child suffered a shattered orbital floor, a fractured cheekbone, and permanent blindness in her left eye due to concentrated blunt force trauma consistent with being slammed into an edge."

"The prosecution has a motion, Your Honor," the Assistant District Attorney, a sharp woman named Marcus, stood up. "We move for remand without bail. The defendant poses a severe threat to the community and an immediate flight risk, given her family’s vast financial resources. Furthermore, we have submitted evidence of ongoing witness intimidation."

Pendelton scoffed loudly. "Objection! Intimidation? That is a fabrication created by the child’s mother, who has a documented history of emotional instability!"

I felt Sarah’s hand gently squeeze my arm.

"Your Honor," Prosecutor Marcus continued smoothly, pulling a flash drive from her folder. "We have submitted two audio files recorded over the last twelve hours. The first contains Mr. Richard Vance attempting to bribe the victim’s mother with two million dollars inside the pediatric ICU. The second, recorded at 12:14 AM today, features the defendant’s mother, Eleanor Vance, threatening to frame the victim’s mother for child abuse unless she perjures herself in this court."

The courtroom gasped.

My mother gasped, dropping her handkerchief as every eye in the gallery turned to stare at her. My father’s jaw dropped in absolute shock.

Judge Thorne took the flash drive, plugged it into his bench monitor, and put on his headphones.

For two agonizing minutes, the entire room sat in total silence while the judge listened to my mother’s cold, calculated threat: 'Call the detective, change your statement, or we destroy you.'

When Judge Thorne removed his headphones, his face was flushed with a terrifying, righteous rage. He glared down at my parents with pure disgust.

"Mr. Pendelton," Judge Thorne’s voice boomed through the courtroom like thunder. "If I hear one more word about 'domestic accidents' or 'emotional instability,' I will personally cite you for contempt."

He slammed his gavel down so hard the wooden block cracked.

"Bail is DENIED. The defendant will remain in custody pending trial. Furthermore, I am issuing a temporary protective order prohibiting Richard and Eleanor Vance from coming within five hundred feet of Chloe Miller or Ruby Miller. If either of you so much as send a text message to this woman, I will have you locked in a cell right beside your daughter!"

Vanessa let out a blood-curdling shriek as the bailiffs grabbed her arms to lead her away. "NO! MOMMY! DAD! DON'T LEAVE ME! DO SOMETHING!"

My mother collapsed onto the wooden bench, weeping hysterically, while my father stared at me with hollow, defeated eyes.

I stood up, adjusted my jacket, and walked out of the courtroom without looking back.
