Chapter 5 - The Courtroom Showdown

The federal grand jury hearing was the event of the year. The courtroom was packed with journalists, corporate rivals, and curious onlookers who wanted to see the fall of New York's royal family.

Eleanor Sterling walked into the room with her chin held high, wearing a pristine black Chanel suit, her face hidden behind dark sunglasses. Cassandra followed behind her, looking exhausted and terrified, her hands visibly trembling as she sat at the defense table. Their lead attorney, an aggressive man named Harrison Vance (no relation to Thomas), immediately moved to suppress the digital evidence.

"Your Honor, this entire prosecution is a personal vendetta," Harrison Vance argued, pointing an accusatory finger at Thomas. "The evidence was gathered using illegal surveillance techniques provided by a disgruntled former fiancé and an opportunistic civilian."

Arthur Pendelton stood up, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Your Honor, the civilian in question is the victim of a coordinated, malicious attempt to frame her for a federal crime. We have the forensic data from the Sterling server, provided voluntarily by the co-CEO of the company, Dominic Sterling."

Eleanor snapped her head around, glaring at her son who was sitting in the back row of the prosecution's side. "You sniveling little traitor," she hissed loudly enough for the entire jury box to hear.

The judge slammed her gavel down. "Mrs. Sterling, one more outburst like that and I will have you held in contempt immediately."

For the next four hours, the prosecution laid out the undeniable truth. The financial records showed that the Sterling family had systematically defrauded their investors, bribed city inspectors, and used their charitable foundations to launder millions. But the final nail in the coffin was the video of the wedding day. The prosecution played the clip of Eleanor and Cassandra tearing Vanessa’s dress apart, followed immediately by the audio recording of Eleanor instructing her security guard to "make sure the dirty little thief never leaves that hotel room without handcuffs."

By the time the hearing concluded, the defense team looked utterly defeated. The judge denied bail for Eleanor, citing her extensive international assets and immense flight risk. The mighty Eleanor Sterling was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs, her empire officially in ruins.
