Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Within forty-eight hours of the disastrous wedding, the Sterling family name was dragged through the mud on every major news outlet in the country. The video of Eleanor and Cassandra ripping Vanessa’s dress apart went viral across the globe, destroying the company's public relations image overnight. Stock prices for Sterling Enterprises plummeted by 22% in a single day.

Vanessa sat in her father's downtown office, wearing a comfortable tracksuit, sipping coffee. On the table across from her sat Arthur Pendelton, a ruthless, top-tier corporate litigation attorney who had been a family friend for years.

"They are trying to declare bankruptcy for the main holding company to protect their offshore assets, Vanessa," Arthur explained, scrolling through a mountain of financial documents. "Eleanor is a cunning woman. She knows the federal criminal charges for corporate fraud and bribery will take months to go to trial. In the meantime, she is trying to move all her liquid assets to Zurich."

"What about the security footage from the bridal suite?" Vanessa asked.

"We have it," Thomas Vance replied, walking into the room with a legal folder. "The FBI raided their estate yesterday. We found the original, unedited footage showing Cassandra herself walking into your suite with the diamond before the ceremony even began. They didn't just want to stop the wedding, Vanessa. They wanted you in a state penitentiary so they could force you to sign a non-disclosure agreement regarding the offshore accounts you discovered during the prenuptial negotiations."

Vanessa leaned back, a fierce determination in her eyes. During her relationship with Dominic, she had accidentally stumbled upon a set of foreign tax documents hidden in his private digital drive. She hadn't understood their full significance at the time, but she had saved copies. Those documents were the exact missing puzzle pieces her father needed to prove that the Sterling family had been laundering money for corrupt foreign officials for over a decade.

"They thought I was just a girl who teaches gym classes," Vanessa said, a sharp, dangerous edge to her voice. "They thought they could destroy me because I didn't have their pedigree. Arthur, I don't want a settlement. I don't want an apology. I want the entire Sterling empire dismantled."
