Chapter 5 - The Gift of Tomorrow

One year later.
The grand ballroom of the Blackwood Manor was filled with classical music, warm amber lights, and the soft laughter of close friends, business associates, and charity leaders.
It was the inauguration of the Sterling-Blackwood Children’s Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting vulnerable women and children fleeing domestic violence, fully funded by the liquidated assets of the former Sterling Logistics Group.
Clara stood near the center of the room, wearing an elegant emerald green gown that draped gracefully over her figure. She was talking happily with Dr. Harrison and several pediatric surgeons from Saint Jude’s Hospital, her face radiant with purpose and joy.
I watched her from the raised balcony, holding a glass of sparkling water, Viktor standing dutifully a few feet behind me.
"The city is peaceful, Sir," Viktor reported quietly. "The transition of the waterfront is complete. Crime rates in the lower district have dropped sixty percent."
"You've done good work, Viktor," I said, taking a slow sip.
"No, Sir," Viktor corrected respectfully. "Mrs. Blackwood did the work. She took the tragedy your enemies caused and turned it into a shield for thousands of innocent people."
I looked down at my wife, my heart swelling with an overwhelming sense of pride and devotion. Viktor was right. I had used my power to tear down our enemies, but Clara had used her heart to build a sanctuary for the future.
Clara caught my eye from across the crowded ballroom. She excused herself from the doctors and walked up the grand staircase toward the balcony, her hand resting lightly against her stomach.
I stepped forward to meet her, taking her hand in mine.
"Are you tired, my love?" I asked gently. "We can leave the party early if you want."
"No," Clara smiled, placing her other hand over mine. "I'm not tired at all. But I do need to tell you something quiet."
"What is it?"
Clara looked around at the glittering ballroom, then leaned in close, pulling my head down so her lips rested right beside my ear.
"I saw Dr. Harrison yesterday morning for my annual checkup," she whispered, her voice trembling with a sweet, breathless excitement.
My breath caught in my throat. I pulled back slightly, searching her eyes. "Clara...?"
Clara took my hand and placed it gently against her lower abdomen.
"Three months, David," she whispered, tears of pure, radiant joy spilling down her cheeks. "We're going to be parents."
The glass in my hand nearly slipped. The man who had commanded armies, brought down politicians, and ruled an empire in the shadows stood completely frozen, overwhelmed by a joy so profound it nearly brought me to my knees.
"Are you sure?" I choked out, my voice raspy with emotion.
Clara nodded happily, kissing my lips passionately. "A healthy baby girl. The doctor said everything is perfect."
I pulled her into my arms, lifting her slightly off the marble floor, spinning her around as she laughed happily against my shoulder.

For years, I believed my power resided in the shadows I controlled, the wealth I held, and the fear I struck into the hearts of bad men. But as I held my wife in my arms under the warm lights of our home, I knew the truth.
My true power was the love we had rebuilt from the ashes.
