Chapter 3 - The Trial of Shadows

The underground vaults beneath the old waterfront district had stood for over a century, built from reinforced granite and steel.

It was 2:00 AM.

Arthur Sterling and his eight sons were chained to heavy steel chairs arranged in a semi-circle inside a vast, dimly lit stone chamber. Their thousand-dollar suits were torn, covered in dust and sweat. For two days, they had been fed nothing but water, forced to sit facing a massive LED television screen mounted on the wall.

On that screen, a continuous news broadcast played.

"In an unprecedented federal crackdown, the Sterling Logistics Empire has officially collapsed," the news anchor announced. "Over two hundred million dollars in assets have been seized under federal racketeering indictments. Former associates have turned state's evidence, revealing widespread bribery, tax evasion, and illegal trafficking..."

Arthur sat with his head bowed, his spirit completely broken. Beside him, his sons were weeping quietly in despair.

The heavy iron door of the chamber groaned open.

I walked into the room, flanked by Viktor and three armed guards. I had stripped off my bloodstained suit from two days ago, now wearing an immaculate double-breasted black overcoat.

The sound of my polished shoes echoing against the stone floor made all nine men flinch in terror.

"David!" Arthur gasped, lifting his hollow, sunken face. "Please! Look at us! We've lost everything! Our business... our money... our homes! The media is destroying us!"

"You haven't lost everything yet, Arthur," I said smoothly, stepping up to a small table set in front of them. "You still have your lives."

"What do you want from us?!" Marcus yelled, his broken wrist wrapped in a crude splint. "You ruined us! You used your federal connections to destroy our family!"

"I didn't use connections, Marcus," I replied cold-bloodedly. "I simply withdrew my protection. Your family existed for thirty years only because my organization found your small logistics routes mildly convenient. The moment you struck my wife, you ceased to be convenient."

I pulled a thick stack of legal documents from my coat and laid them on the table.

"These are full confession statements," I announced. " detailing every illegal transaction, every bribe, every assault, and every fraud your family has committed over the last twenty years. Along with a full confession for the murder of my unborn child."

Julian sneered through his bruised lips. "And why would we sign that? If we sign that, we spend the rest of our lives in maximum-security prison!"

I leaned forward, resting both hands on the table, staring directly into Julian's eyes.

"If you sign them, you spend the rest of your lives in prison," I whispered, my tone dropping into an icy abyss. "If you do not sign them... you leave this room tonight in iron boxes, and your names will be erased from every public record on this earth. Your graves will never be found."

A suffocating, terrifying silence filled the stone chamber.

The eight brothers looked at their father, then back at me. They saw no mercy in my eyes. They saw no hesitation. They saw only an absolute, unstoppable god of vengeance who held their very breathing in the palm of his hand.

"Where... where do we sign?" Arthur sobbed, tears spilling over his wrinkled cheeks.

Ten minutes later, nine signatures were inked onto the bottom of the confession papers. Viktor gathered the documents, placing them into a leather briefcase.

"Send these to the State Prosecutor's office," I ordered Viktor. "Ensure they are placed in solitary confinement until trial. No bail. No visitors."

"It will be done, Sir," Viktor nodded.

I turned my back on the Sterling family, stepping toward the iron door.

"David!" Arthur called out frantically behind me. "Will... will Clara ever forgive us?"

May you like

I stopped at the doorway, looking over my shoulder one last time.

"Clara was the only soft thing in my world, Arthur," I said softly. "And you broke her. You don't get to ask for her forgiveness. You get to pray every night that I never decide to visit your prison cell."
