Chapter 1 - The First Avalanche

The fluorescent lights of the hospital hallway flickered, casting long, stark shadows across the white linoleum floor.

Clara’s father, Arthur Sterling, stood frozen with his phone held against his ear. His jaw hung slightly open, his face draining of all color until he resembled a ghost in a thousand-dollar Italian suit. Across from him, his eight sons—men who had built their reputations on back-alley intimidation and predatory loan sharking under the guise of the Sterling Logistics Group—were staring down at their own vibrating screens in utter, paralyzed confusion.

"Father... what is happening?" Marcus, the eldest brother, stammered, his fingers twitching as he looked at a text message from his offshore bank. "My accounts in Zurich... they didn't just freeze them. They cleared them. The liquid assets are gone!"

"My licenses..." Julian, the third brother, choked out, his eyes wide with panic. "The federal maritime commission just revoked our dock permits. Every shipment in the harbor is being seized right now by heavy tactical units!"

Arthur ignored his sons. His trembling voice bled through the speaker of his phone. "Senator Vance... please, you owe me! I funded your campaign! You promised—"

A harsh, mechanical click ended the call. Senator Vance had hung up.

I stood three feet away from Arthur, my hands tucked calmly into the pockets of my tailored charcoal trousers. The scent of antiseptic faded beneath the cold breeze drift from the heavy double doors at the end of the hall.

THUD. THUD. THUD.

The rhythmic sound of heavy tactical boots echoed through the corridor. The doors flew open, and twelve men in immaculate black suits, wearing silver lapel pins featuring a crest of a coiled viper, stepped into the hallway. At the front walked Viktor Vance—the shadow chief of the city’s private security network, a man who answered to no court, no mayor, and no law.

Only to me.

Viktor stopped beside me, bowing his head slightly in absolute reverence. "The perimeter is secure, Sir. Every exit, staircase, and garage bay is locked down. Federal authorities are executing thirty-two simultaneous raids on all Sterling properties across three states as we speak."

Arthur’s phone slipped from his numb fingers, shattering against the hard floor. He looked at me, his eyes wide with a terrifying, agonizing realization.

"Who... who are you?" Arthur whimpered, taking a step back until his spine hit the cold wall. "You were just a corporate consultant... Clara said you ran a small venture capital firm!"

"Clara knew only what kept her safe and happy, Arthur," I said, my voice dangerously calm, vibrating with a quiet, lethal frequency. "She didn't need to know that every politician in this state pays tribute to my family. She didn't need to know that the docks, the banks, the courts, and the shadows belong to me."

I stepped closer to Arthur, towering over the old man who had dared to touch what was mine.

"You thought because I didn't beat my chest or make threats in public, I was weak," I murmured, leaning in so close he could smell the faint scent of rain and tobacco on my collar. "You thought my quietness was vulnerability. But tonight, you didn't just hurt my wife. You murdered my child."

Marcus, fueled by a burst of desperate, foolish adrenaline, lunged forward with his fist raised. "You bastard! I'll break your—"

CRACK!

Before Marcus's arm could even fully extend, Viktor moved like a ghost. He caught Marcus’s wrist, twisted it backward until the bone snapped through the skin, and slammed his face face-first into the linoleum floor with bone-shattering force!

Marcus screamed, a high-pitched wail of agony that echoed off the hospital walls.

The other seven brothers gasped, drawing back in sheer terror, raising their hands in surrender as Viktor's men drew silenced 9mm pistols and pressed them directly against their foreheads.

"No, Viktor," I commanded softly, raising a single hand. "Not here. Not outside my wife’s room. Clara deserves peace while she fights for her life."

Viktor lifted his foot off Marcus’s back, pulling the screaming brother up by his collar.

I looked Arthur directly in his weeping, terrified eyes. "You built your little empire over thirty years by stepping on the weak, Arthur. By sunrise, there will not be a single stone left of the Sterling name. You will be broke, disgraced, hunted, and stripped of everything you held dear."

"Please..." Arthur begged, dropping to his knees, clutching the hem of my trousers with trembling hands. "Julian... Marcus... they were foolish! I didn't know—"

"You stood in this hallway and laughed," I interrupted, kicking his hands away with absolute disgust. "Take them into custody, Viktor. Keep them alive in the cellar at the docks. I want them to watch the sunrise through iron bars while their world burns."

May you like

"Yes, Mr. Blackwood," Viktor replied coldly.

As Viktor’s men dragged the crying, screaming Sterling family down the hallway into the waiting black SUVs, I turned around, pushed open the quiet glass door of the ICU, and stepped back into the sanctuary of my wife's room.
