Chapter 5 - A Home of Our Own

Eight months later.
The summer sun reflected off the pristine blue waters of Lake Michigan as warm breezes rustled the white silk drapes of the cliffside gazebo.
Violins played a soft, romantic melody as two hundred guests stood up from their seats.
I walked down the aisle in a custom lace gown that flowed like morning light around my feet. I didn't have a father to give me away, and I didn't need one. I walked down that aisle on my own two feet—strong, victorious, and completely free.
At the end of the aisle stood Daniel.
He wore a tailored black tuxedo, his eyes shining with tears of pure joy as he watched me approach. Beside him stood his grandmother, Eleanor, smiling proudly in the front row, alongside genuine friends and colleagues who loved and valued me for who I was.
When I reached Daniel, he took both of my hands into his, his grip warm, steady, and safe.
"I, Daniel," he spoke into the microphone, his voice rich with emotion, "promise to cherish you, honor you, and protect your light from every storm. You are my home, my equal, and my greatest blessing."
"I, Claire," I replied, looking deeply into the eyes of the man who had stood by me when the whole world stayed silent, "promise to love you, build with you, and stand beside you through every dawn and every shadow."
"By the power vested in me," the officiant smiled, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Daniel pulled me close, dipping me slightly as he pressed his lips against mine in a deep, passionate kiss that made the entire crowd erupt into ecstatic cheers and applause.
Later that evening, as the stars twinkled above the lake and laughter filled the grand reception hall, Daniel and I stood together on the private balcony overlooking the water.
He wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.
"Happy, Mrs. Kendrick?" he whispered softly into my ear.
I leaned back against his chest, holding his hands wrapped over mine, watching the reflection of the moon dance across the peaceful waves.

"I've never been happier," I smiled, feeling the warmth of true love surround me completely.
The girl who had once been hit at a Thanksgiving table was gone forever. Standing in her place was a woman who had chosen her own worth—and built a life where she would never have to bow her head again.
