Chapter 2 - The Ring and the Legacy

The sound of the heavy front door clicking shut behind us cut through the chilly November air like a guillotine.
As we walked down the gravel driveway toward Daniel’s car, my mother’s voice screamed from the porch behind us, high-pitched and hysterical: "You're a coward, Claire! You're ruining this family over a misunderstanding!"
I didn't turn around. I couldn't. My knees were shaking so hard I could barely keep my footing on the frozen pavement.
Daniel opened the passenger door, guided me inside gently, and shut it before walking around to the driver's side. The moment he turned the key and the engine roared to life, he reached across the console, pulled my trembling hands into his, and brought them to his lips.
"I am so sorry, Claire," Daniel whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion. "I should have walked into that dining room the second I realized what they were doing."
"You came in at the exact right moment," I choked out, a single tear finally breaking free and spilling over my bruised cheek. "If you hadn't... I think I would have believed them. I would have thought I was just a second choice."
Daniel shifted in his seat, turning his full body toward me. His dark eyes burned with absolute sincerity.
"Listen to me very carefully," Daniel said, his thumb tenderly wiping away my tear. "Three years ago, when Vivian ditched me at that restaurant, it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Because two weeks later, I met you at the firm's charity gala. You weren't flashy or manipulative like your sister. You were brilliant, kind, and real. Vivian was a draft, Claire. You are my life."
He pulled a small velvet box from his coat pocket and placed it gently in my palm.
"I didn't just buy you an engagement ring, Claire," Daniel said softly. "My grandmother gave me this three days ago when I told her I was going to ask you to move into the estate with me."
I opened the box. Inside lay a breathtaking, vintage platinum ring set with a flawless sapphire surrounded by diamonds—a legendary piece from the Vance-Kendrick family heirloom collection, worth more than my mother's entire house.
"My grandmother watched how your family treated you when we visited them last month," Daniel explained. "She told me, 'That girl has a noble soul surrounded by wolves. Give her this ring so she knows she belongs to a real family now.'"
I looked at the sparkling sapphire, then at Daniel. The heavy weight on my finger from earlier vanished, replaced by an unshakeable sense of peace.
My phone vibrated violently in my purse. A barrage of text messages began flooding in from my mother and Vivian:
Mom: You are cut off from the family trust! Return the car your father let you borrow! Vivian: You think you won? Daniel will realize how plain you are in six months. Enjoy my leftovers.
I looked at the screen, felt no fear, no regret, and pressed a single button: Block Contact.

"Where to now, future Mrs. Kendrick?" Daniel asked, a warm, protective smile gracing his lips.
"Somewhere far away from their dinner table," I replied.
