Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

Four months later.

The high-end lounge of the Grand Regency Hotel in downtown Chicago was humming with corporate executives and socialites attending the annual North Coast Development Summit.

I stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, dressed in an immaculate ivory jumpsuit, a glass of champagne in my hand. Beside me stood Daniel and his grandmother, Eleanor Kendrick, the formidable matriarch of Kendrick Enterprises. Over the last four months, under Eleanor’s guidance, I had taken over as Director of Design for the firm's new $200 million urban renewal project.

Suddenly, the glass entrance doors swept open, and a hush fell over the local high-society crowd.

My mother, Linda, walked in wearing an overly dramatic velvet dress, flanked by my father, who looked utterly miserable, and Vivian, who was draped in a sparkling gown that looked slightly too desperate for a afternoon summit.

My mother’s family business—a regional interior supply firm—had been bleeding money for three months after major developers pulled their contracts due to rumors of financial mismanagement. They were here today to beg the Kendrick Board for a bailout supply agreement.

They had no idea I was the one who approved those agreements.

As my mother scanned the room, her eyes locked onto me. She froze, her champagne glass hovering mid-air. Vivian’s jaw dropped as her eyes swept over my designer outfit, my radiant skin, and the massive sapphire ring sparkling on my finger under the chandelier light.

"Claire?" my mother gasped, marching toward our group with practiced entitlement, though her fake smile was strained. "Claire! Oh, thank goodness we found you! Your father and I have been trying to reach you for months!"

"Your calls were blocked, Linda," I said calmly, taking a sip of my drink without a single flicker of anxiety.

Vivian stepped forward, her eyes narrowing with pure jealousy. "Claire, stop playing the victim. Mom was just stressed at Thanksgiving. Family forgives family. We're here for the Kendrick vendor meeting."

Eleanor Kendrick stepped forward, leaning lightly on her silver cane, her sharp gaze cutting through my mother like a scalpel.

"Mrs. Vale," Eleanor said, her voice dropping the temperature in the room by ten degrees. "You are addressing the Vice President of Design for Kendrick Enterprises. Show some respect."

My mother blinked, taken aback. "Vice President? Claire? But... she's just a junior consultant!"

"She was a junior consultant when you were treating her like a servant," Daniel stepped up, placing a loving arm around my waist. "Now she commands a forty-person team and holds the final sign-off on every supplier contract for this firm."

Vivian turned pale. "Claire... you can't be serious. Our family business needs the Kendrick contract! If we don't get this supply deal, father's firm goes into bankruptcy by next month!"

"Then I suggest you start looking for other buyers," I said smoothly.
