Chapter 5 - The Trial and the Ultimate Betrayal

Three months later, the high-profile trial of Diego Robles began. The courtroom was packed with journalists, former colleagues, and curious onlookers who had followed the dramatic story on social media.
Diego sat at the defense table, looking unrecognizable. He had lost weight, his hair was unkempt, and the arrogant smirk that once defined his face was replaced by a look of hollow desperation. Beside him sat a public defender who looked like he wanted to be anywhere else in the world.
On the other side of the courtroom sat Sofía, flanked by the best legal team in the country. She looked stunning, projecting an aura of absolute authority and calm dignity.
The prosecution presented a mountain of undeniable evidence: bank transfers, forensic audits, and the forged documents Diego had used to steal from his company. But the final nail in the coffin came when the prosecutor called their star witness to the stand.
"The state calls Amparo Robles," the bailiff announced.
Diego gasped, turning his head sharply toward the back of the courtroom. Entering the room, looking frail and dressed in faded, cheap clothing, was his mother. But she didn't look at Diego with love or pity. Her eyes were filled with venomous anger.
Doña Amparo took the stand, swore an oath, and looked directly at the judge.
"Señora Amparo," the prosecutor began. "Did you have knowledge of your son's financial manipulations?"
"I knew he was doing something, yes," Amparo said, her voice shaking, but her words clear. "But my son lied to me! He told me he was a genius, that he was taking money that belonged to him! He forced me to sign those papers! He threatened to leave me on the streets if I didn't help him! Diego is a monster, a thief! He ruined my life, he stole my retirement, and he deserves to rot in prison!"
Diego stood up so fast his chair flew backward. "Ma! How can you say that?! You were the one who demanded the luxury party! You were the one who told me to steal so we could show off to the family! You threw the food at my kids! You told me to treat Sofía like dirt!"
"Silence in the court!" the judge shouted, banging the gavel repeatedly. "Mr. Robles, sit down or you will be removed!"
Diego sank back into his chair, tears streaming down his face as his own mother continued to testify against him, destroying any chance he had of a lighter sentence just to save herself from potential probation charges. The ultimate betrayal was complete. The mother who had raised him to be a monster had devoured him the moment things turned dark.
During the court recess, Sofía walked out into the hallway to get some air. As she stood near the window, she heard hurried footsteps behind her. She turned around to see Doña Amparo standing there, her hands clasped together in a pleading gesture.
"Sofía... please," the old woman begged, her voice cracking. "You win. You proved your point. I am an old woman, I have nothing left. I am living in a miserable shelter. Please, talk to the judge. Tell them Diego is the only guilty one. And... please let me see the girls. I am their grandmother. I want to apologize to them."
Sofía looked at the woman who had caused her so much pain, the woman who had made her daughters cry and wash dishes like servants. She felt no anger anymore. Only a profound, clean emptiness.
"You want to see my daughters, Amparo?" Sofía asked, her voice quiet but piercing. "No. You will never see them again. You will never hear their voices, and you will never know what kind of incredible women they will become. You threw trash at them because they were girls. You valued sons and money above human decency. Now, you have neither."
"Sofía, please! Have mercy!" Amparo cried out, reaching for her hand.
Sofía stepped back, completely out of her reach. "Mercy is for those who show it, Amparo. You reap exactly what you sow. Enjoy your harvest."

An hour later, the court reconvened. The judge delivered the final verdict: Diego Robles was found guilty on all counts of grand larceny, corporate fraud, and identity theft. Due to the severity of the financial crimes and the lack of cooperation, he was sentenced to twelve years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, with no possibility of parole.
As Diego was led away in chains, crying out for forgiveness, Sofía stood up, closed her folder, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright afternoon sun, leaving the ghosts of her past behind forever.
