Chapter 4 - The Legal Trap Snaps Shut

Within forty-eight hours, the news of Diego Robles’s downfall spread through his social circle like wildfire. The man who had thrown a million-peso party was now staying in a dingy, two-bedroom motel on the outskirts of the city, sharing a room with his weeping, hysterical mother.
Doña Amparo could not accept reality. "This is a conspiracy! That witch Sofía stole your money! She must have been sleeping with her boss to get that car, Diego! You are the man! You need to go to court and take half of everything she owns!"
Diego sat on the edge of the stained mattress, his head in his hands. He was terrified. Every time a car drove past the motel, he thought it was the police coming to arrest him for embezzlement. "Ma, shut up! You don't understand! She has the promissory note!"
"What promissory note?" Amparo snapped.
"The $300,000 note!" Diego yelled, finally losing his temper. "Before the party, she told me her family was lending us the money to cover the catering and the band so my corporate cards wouldn't get flagged! I signed it without looking at the lender's name! It wasn't her parents... it was her holding company!"
Before Amparo could process the information, a heavy knock sounded on the motel door. Diego jumped, his heart pounding in his chest.
"Police! Open the door!" a loud voice commanded.
Diego ran toward the bathroom window, attempting to squeeze through, but it was too small. The door was kicked open, and three police officers, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray suit, entered the room. The woman was Valeria, Sofía’s top corporate litigation lawyer.
"Diego Robles," the lead officer stated, pulling out handcuffs. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, and identity theft, following a criminal complaint filed by your former employer."
"Wait! Please!" Diego screamed as his arms were pinned behind his back, the cold metal of the handcuffs clicking around his wrists. "I can pay it back! I have assets!"
Valeria stepped forward, opening a legal folder. "You have no assets, Mr. Robles. As of nine o'clock this morning, the $300,000 promissory note you signed has been legally executed due to default. Since you have no funds, the court has ordered the immediate seizure of your only remaining property—the small apartment your father left you in Guadalajara, as well as your mother’s bank accounts, which were listed as secondary guarantees on your loan applications."
Doña Amparo let out a blood-curdling shriek. "My house? My savings? You can't take my money! That's my retirement! Diego did this, not me!"
"You signed the witness and guarantor lines on three separate fraudulent bank applications, Señora Amparo," Valeria replied with a chillingly professional smile. "You are officially listed as a co-conspirator in his financial fraud. You won't be going to jail today due to your age, but your accounts are frozen. You are officially penniless."
"No! Sofía! Tell that ungrateful girl to stop this!" Amparo wept, falling to her knees, grabbing the lawyer's trousers. "We are family! She gave birth to my granddaughters!"
Valeria looked down at her with utter disdain. "The same granddaughters you threw garbage at two nights ago? The same daughters you told didn't deserve a place at the table? Sofía has a message for you, Señora: The table has been cleared, and you're left with the bill."
Diego was dragged out of the motel room in tears, screaming for his mother, while the neighbors watched and filmed the entire scene on their phones. By afternoon, the video of the "arrogant luxury executive" being arrested in a cheap motel went viral on Facebook, accumulating millions of views and thousands of comments condemning his actions.
Meanwhile, at the Vanguardia Inmobiliaria corporate headquarters, Sofía sat in her executive office. The atmosphere was peaceful. Emilia and Camila were sitting at a small table in the corner, happily drawing pictures with colorful markers.
Mateo entered the office, placing a document on her desk. "It's done, Sofía. Diego’s bail has been set at $100,000, a sum he cannot afford. His mother attempted to contact several family members for help, but after seeing the viral video and the fraud charges, everyone has blocked their numbers. They are completely isolated."
Sofía nodded, looking out at the beautiful city skyline. For the first time in ten years, the heavy, suffocating weight on her chest was gone. She felt light, powerful, and entirely free.
"And the divorce papers?" Sofía asked.
"Delivered directly to his holding cell," Mateo confirmed. "He will sign them. He has no leverage left."
Sofía walked over to her daughters, kneeling beside them. Camila held up her drawing—a picture of a big, beautiful house with three figures inside: Sofía, Emilia, and herself. There was no father figure in the drawing, and no cruel grandmother.

"Do you like it, Mommy?" Camila asked, her eyes shining.
"I love it, my angel," Sofía whispered, hugging them both tightly. "It's the most beautiful house in the world. And it's ours."
