Chapter 7 - Confrontation in the Study

For a long, agonizing moment, neither of us moved. The distant sound of laughter and violin music drifted in from the gala outside, feeling a million miles away.

My mother’s face twisted into a mask of pure venom.

“You pathetic little thief,” she hissed, taking a slow step toward me. “After everything I’ve given you, after every sacrifice I made to keep you safe from the world, this is how you repay me? Stealing from your own mother?”

“I’m not stealing, Eleanor,” I said, my voice steadying as I gripped the brass key tightly inside my pocket. “I’m taking back what you stole.”

My mother let out a sharp, cold laugh. “You think that key gives you power? You think a few dusty papers in an abandoned house can undo what I’ve built? The police, the judges, the entire town council—they all know me. They think you’re unstable. Just like your sister.”

“They won't think I’m unstable when Marcus Vance publishes the documents proving you forged Beatrice’s will and stole Blackwood Manor,” I countered, standing my ground.

For the first time, a flicker of genuine panic crossed my mother’s eyes. It was gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a dangerous, calculating glare.

“You think you can beat me?” she whispered, lunging forward with shocking speed to grab my wrist. “You don't have the stomach for it, Clara. You’re weak. You’ve always been weak.”

Before she could grab the key from my pocket, the study door swung open wider.

Standing in the doorway wasn't security. It was Sarah, flanked by two local police officers whose expressions were grim and professional.

“Step away from her, Mother,” Sarah said, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the room.

My mother whipped around, her aristocratic composure instantly returning. “Officer! Thank goodness! This woman broke into my private study and stole my property! Arrest her immediately!”

The lead officer—Chief Miller—stepped forward, but instead of pulling out handcuffs for me, he pulled out a folded official document.

“Eleanor Vance,” Chief Miller said formally, his voice echoing in the quiet room. “You are being detained for questioning regarding the suspected forgery of probate documents and elder financial abuse dating back twenty-five years concerning the estate of Beatrice Vance.”

My mother’s face drained of all color. The untouchable matriarch, for the first time in her life, looked ancient and frail.

“This is absurd,” she stammered, her voice losing its edge. “A malicious fabrication by my ungrateful daughters—”

“We have the original documents secured by Arthur at Blackwood Manor, along with sworn depositions and financial audits,” Chief Miller interrupted smoothly. “And now, it appears we have you caught red-handed trying to obstruct an ongoing investigation.”

As the officers stepped forward and placed cold steel handcuffs around my mother’s wrists, she looked at me over her shoulder. Her eyes weren't angry anymore. They were dead, hollow, stripped of all power.

“You’ll destroy this family,” she whispered as they led her past us.

“No, Mom,” I replied softly, watching as the door closed behind her. “We’re finally saving it.”
