Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Armed with the knowledge of Blackwood Manor, I returned home that evening with a renewed sense of purpose. I picked up Emily from my sister Sarah’s house. Sarah had already filled Emily with cookies, warmth, and laughter, and for the first time in days, I saw a genuine smile touch my daughter’s face.

When we got home, I tucked Emily into bed, reading her favorite storybook until her eyelids grew heavy.

Once she was fast asleep, I began my own investigation into my mother’s current life. If the key to the iron safe at Blackwood Manor was hidden in my mother’s house, I needed to know the layout of her fortress.

My mother lived in a gated suburban estate on the other side of town—a monument to her manufactured success. She lived alone, surrounded by smart-home security systems, motion-activated cameras, and an alarm system tied directly to a private security firm.

Breaking in physically was suicide. I needed a legal, undeniable way inside.

The next morning, I called Sarah and laid out the entire plan. To my surprise, my sister didn’t try to talk me out of it. Instead, her eyes flashed with a fierce, vindictive light.

“She ruined our childhood, Clara,” Sarah said, her voice shaking with suppressed rage. “She convinced me I was unstable, medicated me for anxiety I didn't have, and drove me out of the family when I wouldn't bow down. I will help you with whatever you need.”

We needed a Trojan horse. And the annual charity gala my mother hosted this coming weekend was the perfect opportunity.

Every year, Eleanor Vance hosted a high-society fundraiser at her home, welcoming dozens of local elites, politicians, and business leaders. It was her crowning social event of the season.

And because I was her daughter—even a estranged, obediently distant one—I still possessed an emergency pass code to the service entrance, left over from when I used to help her cater the event years ago.

Over the next three days, Sarah and I coordinated every detail. Sarah would manage the distractions during the gala, keeping the guests occupied in the garden marquee, while I slipped inside the house to locate my mother’s private safe and retrieve the key to Blackwood Manor.

At the same time, I contacted a seasoned investigative journalist named Marcus Vance (no relation), who specialized in exposing corporate and estate fraud. I sent him copies of the historical property records and Arthur’s preliminary statements.

“If you can get me the documents from that safe,” Marcus told me over a secure phone call, “we won’t just expose her locally. We’ll bring down her entire foundation. But you have to move fast. People like your mother don't go down quietly.”

The countdown had begun. Every tick of the clock brought us closer to the night that would either free our family forever or hand us over to my mother’s eternal control.
