Chapter 5 - THE ASHES OF A DYING FIRE

Three weeks later, the rain hammered against the reinforced glass of the federal visiting booth.

Arturo Brooks looked ten years older. His bespoke Tom Ford suit was replaced by an orange detention jumpsuit. His hair was uncombed, his eyes bloodshot, and his knuckles white as he gripped the bolted metal table.

The heavy steel door on the opposite side clicked open.

Elena walked in.

She wore a simple, elegant gray trench coat. Her face was fully healed, the skin smooth and flawless, framed by her dark hair pulled back into a sophisticated knot. She didn't look angry. She didn't look broken. She looked entirely, terrifyingly free.

Arturo slammed his hands against the glass partition, his voice cracking with a mixture of rage and pathetic desperation.

“Elena! You have to drop the charges! You have to sign the release forms!” he screamed, ignoring the correctional officer who immediately stepped closer with a baton. “They’re talking about twenty years! My company is gone! Brenda is facing trial! You can't do this to me—we were married!”

Elena slowly picked up the plastic telephone receiver on her side of the glass. Arturo did the same, his breathing ragged and frantic.

“You told me something the morning you threw boiling coffee in my face, Arturo,” Elena said, her voice transmitted through the tiny speaker with crystal clarity.

Arturo froze, his eyes widening in sudden, crushing dread.

“You said: ‘Obey me or get out of this house,’” Elena continued, her gaze never wavering from his panicked face. “You gave me a choice.”

She leaned slightly closer to the glass.

“I chose to get out. And now, you get to live with the consequences of the world I left behind.”

Arturo opened his mouth to scream, to threaten, to beg—but the words caught in his throat as he realized the horrifying truth.

He had spent eight years trying to reduce his wife to nothing. He had broken her trust, mocked her pain, and finally tried to scald her skin to enforce his dominance. But in doing so, he had picked a fight with a woman who owned the very foundation beneath his feet.

The heavy buzzer sounded, signaling the end of the visit.

Elena placed her receiver back on the cradle with a soft click. She stood up, smoothed the front of her coat, and turned away without looking back once.

As she stepped out of the federal facility into the crisp, clean afternoon air of Mexico City, the sun broke through the gray clouds, bathing the bustling streets in golden light.

She took a deep, steady breath of the cool air, climbed into her waiting car, and drove forward into a future that was entirely her own.
