Chapter 4 - THE BOARDROOM TAKEOVER

Inside the glass-walled executive boardroom on the twentieth floor of Brooks & Associates, the atmosphere was thick with panic.

The emergency board meeting Arturo had scheduled to finalize the Polanco development was still in session—only Arturo wasn't at the head of the table.

Instead, sitting in the high-backed leather chair reserved for the primary capital investor was a woman they hadn't seen in six years.

Elena entered the room wearing an impeccably tailored black Chanel suit. The high collar subtly concealed the faint pink remnants of the healing burns on her neck, but her posture was straight, unyielding, and absolute. Behind her stood Victoria Salgado and two federal corporate receivers.

The chief financial officer, a nervous man named Gutierrez, dropped his pen. “Elena? What... what are you doing here? Where is Arturo?”

Elena walked slowly to the head of the table, placing her leather briefcase down with a soft, deliberate thud. She didn't sit down. She simply rested her palms on the polished mahogany surface and looked around the room at the men who had spent years nodding deferentially to Arturo while ignoring her existence.

“Arturo is currently detained at the federal penitentiary downtown,” Elena said, her voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of emotion. “He is facing up to fifteen years for financial fraud and aggravated assault.”

A cacophony of protests erupted around the table.

“This is insane!” shouted one board member, a man Arturo had handpicked to rubber-stamp his illegal loans. “You can't just barge in here—!”

“I can,” Elena interrupted, her voice cutting through the noise like a scalpel. She nodded to Victoria, who slid a thick document across the mahogany toward Gutierrez.

“Take a look at page four, Mr. Gutierrez,” Victoria instructed coldly. “Specifically the foundational trust deed signed when this company was established eleven years ago.”

Gutierrez fumbled with the pages, his eyes scanning the legal jargon. As he read, the blood rapidly drained from his face.

“This... this isn't possible,” Gutierrez whispered, looking up at Elena with genuine terror. “Meridian Holdings holds eighty-five percent equity in every single subsidiary asset under Brooks & Associates. Arturo was just a managing director... he didn't own the holding company. You... you are the majority voting shareholder.”

“My father anticipated that Arturo’s ambition would eventually outgrow his competence,” Elena said quietly, pulling out her chair and finally sitting down. “He just underestimated how cruel Arturo could be while losing control.”

She leaned forward, her blue eyes fixing on every terrified man in the room.

“Effective immediately, this corporation is being placed into receivership under my direct supervision. Every unauthorized contract is void. Every fraudulent loan is being reported to federal authorities. And as for the Polanco property?” She offered a cold, razor-thin smile. “It has already been reclaimed by the Meridian Trust.”
