Chapter 3 - THE SISTER’S RECKONING

While Arturo was being booked at the downtown federal detention facility, Brenda Vance was sitting in the high-end hair salon in Polanco she had already begun decorating, barking orders at a team of terrified interior contractors.

“I want Italian marble on these floors! Not local stone! My brother’s company is wiring the final deposit today, so spare no expense!” she snapped, waving a gold-plated designer cigarette case.

The glass front door of the salon chimed.

Two men in sharp charcoal suits walked in, flanked by a uniformed police officer. They weren't contractors. They carried sleek leather briefcases and wore expressions of absolute professional detachment.

“Are you Brenda Vance?” the taller man asked, flashing a gold badge issued by the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV).

Brenda scoffed, crossing her arms. “Yes. And if you’re here about the permits, my brother’s lawyers have already—"

“We aren't here about permits, Ms. Vance,” the investigator interrupted smoothly, pulling a thick stack of forensic accounting documents from his case. “We are here to execute an immediate administrative seizure of all properties, funds, and assets procured through unauthorized wire transfers originating from Meridian Holdings trusts and fraudulent corporate loans.”

Brenda’s color drained instantly. Her cigarette slipped from her fingers, clattering against the bare concrete floor. “What are you talking about? That’s family money! Arturo said—”

“Arturo Brooks does not own those funds,” the investigator stated, his voice ringing clearly through the empty salon. “They belong to Elena Meridian-Brooks. Furthermore, a warrant has been issued for your arrest as an active co-conspirator in wire fraud and grand larceny.”

Before Brenda could scream, the police officer stepped forward, gently but firmly taking her by the elbow.

“You have the right to remain silent,” the officer recited.

As Brenda was marched out past the plate-glass window into the harsh midday sun, she caught sight of her reflection in the glass—panicked, exposed, and entirely stripped of the borrowed power she had ridden on for years. The dream of her exclusive Polanco studio vanished like smoke in the wind.
