Chapter 6 - The Liquidation of a Parasite

Three days passed, and the storm outside the hospital gave way to a crisp, freezing Manhattan winter morning.
In a low-rent motel near the Lincoln Tunnel, Derek Walsh woke up to the sound of his door being kicked off its hinges. Before he could scream, two state marshals threw him onto the dirty carpet, pinning his arms behind his back as a senior investigator from the District Attorney's office stepped into the room.
"Derek Walsh," the investigator said, dropping a thick legal stack onto the bed. "You are under arrest for intentional corporate embezzlement, multi-million dollar tax evasion, and the illegal transfer of marital assets prior to a medical emergency."
"What?" Derek shrieked, his face pressed into the cheap rug. "This is a mistake! My wife... my wife has money! She’s at St. Catherine’s!"
"Your wife filed for an expedited emergency divorce yesterday at 4:00 PM," the investigator sneered, signaling the officers to drag him out. "And as for your assets... every account you own was liquidated by Holloway Meridian Capital at 9:00 AM yesterday to pay off your outstanding corporate fraud debts. You don't have a dollar to your name, Mr. Walsh. You don't even own the clothes on your back."

As Derek was loaded into the back of a black transport van, he looked up at the towering glass skyscrapers of Manhattan, realizing too late that when you leave a king’s queen to bleed in a hallway, the king doesn't just sue you.
He erases you.
