Chapter 5 - The Glass Sanctuary

The private NICU suite at St. Catherine’s looked less like a hospital room and more like a high-tech laboratory. The only sound was the rhythmic, gentle puffing of a state-of-the-art ventilator and the soft, green hum of the digital monitors.
In the center of the room sat a massive, double-walled glass incubator. Inside it, lying on a soft, sterile nest of blue fabric, was a tiny, perfect human being. Her skin was translucent, her fingers no larger than matchsticks, her chest rising and falling with the assistance of the machine.
Claire was sitting in a wheelchair beside the glass, her pale face illuminated by the green glow of the screens. She was wearing a soft cashmere robe Jay’s team had brought in, her eyes glued to the tiny life inside the box.
The door clicked open softly. Jay walked in, carrying a small, beautifully bound leather folder. He moved with a quiet reverence, as if afraid any sudden noise might shatter the fragile peace of the room.
He stopped behind Claire’s wheelchair, his large hands resting gently on her shoulders. Claire reached up, her fingers wrapping around his wrist, pressing his warmth against her neck.
"She looks like you, Jay," Claire whispered, her voice cracking with an overwhelming, raw grief. "The nose. The shape of her jaw. Even the way she clenches her little fists."
Jay went completely still, his heart skipping a violent beat against his ribs. He looked down at the tiny baby, then at Claire. "Claire... what are you saying?"
Claire turned her head, her hazel eyes swimming with tears as she looked up at her first love. "I didn't know, Jay. I swear to you, I didn't know until the doctor showed me her blood work during the intake. Derek and I... we haven't been intimate in over eight months. The timeline... the night of the tech gala in October, when you found me in the garden after he left me at the table... it was you, Jay. It was always you."
Jay felt the room tilt beneath his feet. The billions he had made, the companies he owned, the towers with his name on them—all of it evaporated into nothingness, replaced by a profound, terrifying, and beautiful truth.
The child he had run across the city to save wasn't just a charity case. She wasn't just his ex-girlfriend’s baby.
She was his daughter.
He dropped to his knees beside the wheelchair, his broad shoulders shaking as he let his tears fall freely onto Claire’s lap. He reached through the circular port of the incubator, his massive index finger gently touching the tiny, fragile palm of the baby.
Instantly, the little girl’s fingers curled around his, gripping him with a fierce, instinctive strength that defied her size.

"Her name is Grace," Claire whispered, her hand moving through Jay’s dark hair. "After your mother."
Jay choked back a sob, pressing his forehead against the glass of the incubator. "Grace," he murmured, his voice rich with an unshakeable, primal devotion. "My beautiful, perfect Grace. I’ve got you. Daddy’s here."
