Chapter 3 - The Raid on Soho

By 11:30 AM, the blizzard had cleared over Manhattan, leaving behind a crisp, glaring winter sun that reflected off the glass towers of Fifth Avenue.

Inside Bergdorf Goodman's premier shoe salon on the second floor, Vanessa Reed stood near the register, her face contorted in absolute rage. She was wearing a six-thousand-dollar white cashmere coat, dark oversized sunglasses, and clutching a crocodile-skin Birkin bag that David had bought her for her birthday.

On the glass counter sat three glossy black shoe boxes containing limited-edition designer heels totaling $8,400.

"What do you mean, 'declined again'?" Vanessa hissed at the young sales associate, slamming her titanium black card onto the counter. "Run it manually! Try the backup corporate line!"

"I'm terribly sorry, Miss Reed," the associate said politely, though her eyes flickered with subtle distaste. "We've attempted to run both cards three times. The system returns an immediate 'Code 99'—Account Frozen by Federal Court Order."

"This is unacceptable!" Vanessa snapped, grabbing her Birkin bag. "Do you have any idea who I am? I am the Marketing Director of Cross Global Enterprises! My partner will have this entire department—"

"Miss Vanessa Reed?"

A deep, commanding voice boomed behind her.

Vanessa turned around sharply. Standing in the center of the marble salon were four uniformed NYPD officers, flanked by two plainclothes investigators from the Manhattan District Attorney's Financial Crimes Unit, and an attorney in an immaculate gray suit holding a thick blue folder.

The attorney was Arthur Vance—my father's lead legal bulldog.

"Who are you?" Vanessa demanded, puffing her chest out, though her hands began to tremble inside her gloves. "This is private harassment! I am shopping!"

"Miss Vanessa Reed," Arthur Vance said, his voice echoing clearly across the high-end department store, attracting the attention of dozens of wealthy shoppers and sales staff. "I am Arthur Vance, representing Vanguard Capital and Mrs. Evelyn Vance-Cross."

The surrounding shoppers gasped, whispers instantly breaking out across the salon:

"Did he say Evelyn Vance?" "As in Vance Logistics?" "Is that the girl from the news blog this morning?"

Vanessa's face went from pale to ash-gray. "I... I don't know what you're talking about! David and I are just business associates!"

"Is that why you are currently wearing an $80,000 Tiffany diamond bracelet that was purchased using stolen corporate escrow funds twenty-four hours ago?" Arthur Vance asked coolly, holding up a certified high-resolution copy of the receipt and the matching corporate wire transfer.

Vanessa instinctively pulled her cashmere sleeve down to cover her wrist.

"That... that was a gift!" she stammered.

"It was grand larceny and conversion of stolen assets, Miss Reed," Investigator Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of polished steel handcuffs from his belt. "Under an emergency order issued by Supreme Court Judge Brenda Sterling two hours ago, all personal property acquired through Cross Global accounts is subject to immediate criminal seizure."

"You can't take my bracelet!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward a display of silk scarves. "This is assault! Help! Someone call security!"

"Bergdorf security is currently assisting our team in towing your Range Rover from the garage downstairs, Miss Reed," Investigator Miller informed her flatly.

He stepped forward, grabbed Vanessa's right wrist, and clicked the cold steel cuff around her wrist with a sharp CLACK.

"No! Get your hands off me!" Vanessa screamed, flailing hysterically as the second handcuff clicked into place. Her oversized designer sunglasses fell off her face, clattering onto the marble floor and shattering beneath the investigator's boot.

shoppers pulled out their smartphones, video recording the entire spectacle as the proud, arrogant marketing director was dragged through the center of Bergdorf Goodman in handcuffs, weeping and screaming.

"The handbag as well, officers," Arthur Vance reminded them calmly, pointing to the Birkin bag in her arm. "That bag was purchased with Vanguard escrow funds on October 14th. It is property of the Vance Trust."

An officer unclasped the Birkin bag from her fingers, dropping it into an official police evidence bag.

"My coat! My coat is designer!" Vanessa sobbed, her hair falling into her tear-streaked face as she was marched toward the express elevators. "David promised me! David said he loved me!"

"Mr. Cross is currently being processed at the 1st Precinct, Miss Reed," Investigator Miller noted dryly as the elevator doors opened. "You can discuss your love life in the holding cell next to his."

Ten minutes later, as the police convoy pulled away from Fifth Avenue, Arthur Vance called my private line at the Greenwich estate.

"It is done, Miss Vance," Arthur reported smoothly. "Miss Reed has been arrested for felony possession of stolen property and corporate conversion. The footage of her arrest will be on the front page of the New York Post within thirty minutes."

I sat in my quiet suite, watching Grace sleep in my arms.

"And the Soho penthouse, Arthur?" I asked softly.

"The locks were changed twenty minutes ago," Arthur replied. "Her clothes, her furniture, and her personal items have been boxed and moved to a commercial storage unit in New Jersey. The lease has been formally transferred back to Vanguard Real Estate."

"Thank you, Arthur," I said, a cool, satisfying warmth spreading through my chest. "Now, prepare the formal court filings for Friday's bail hearing. I want to make sure David Cross doesn't see a single ray of sunlight for a very long time."
