Chapter 14 - The Honeypot

Forty-eight hours later, the bait was taken.
Rain lashed against the rocky coastline of Portland, Maine, where the sprawling automated docks of the North Atlantic Port Terminal stretched for miles into the dark ocean mist. Giant gantry cranes stood like quiet steel leviathans along the piers, their automated arms unloading massive container ships under the glare of industrial floodlights.
Deep within the terminal’s primary administrative building, a single room served as the nerve center. Dozens of glowing monitors tracked container weights, automated rail lines, and vessel entry schedules.
Inside a luxury command trailer parked five miles away in an abandoned industrial park, Julian Vance sat in the dark, his face illuminated by the blue glow of four high-powered satellite terminals.
Beside him stood a imposing man named Volkov, a former Eastern European intelligence operative who led the mercenary team Julian had hired with his remaining cash.
"The vulnerability in their cyber-grid is confirmed, Mr. Vance," Volkov said, pointing to a cascading line of red code on his monitor. "Their primary firewall patch at the Maine facility failed during an automated system update twenty minutes ago. We have full administrative access to their central SCADA system."
Julian let out a long, raspy breath, a terrible, triumphant smile spreading across his pale face. He looked older, gaunt, and wild-eyed after days of fleeing international authorities, but his eyes burned with an unholy light.
"Emma thought she was clever," Julian whispered, clutching his gold-headed cane with a white-knuckled grip. "She thought she could buy the law firm, arrest David, and secure the port before midnight. She’s just an amateur playing with a dead man’s money."
"We are ready to upload the wipe command," Volkov reported, his fingers hovering over the mechanical keyboard. "Once executed, the automated cranes will overwrite their safety limits, causing three heavy container rigs to collapse onto the primary fuel storage tanks. The resulting fire will shut down the entire North Atlantic corridor for six months. Vanguard’s stock will plunge sixty percent by tomorrow morning."
Julian leaned forward, his face inches from the screen. "Do it. Burn her empire to the ground. Let her see what happens when she tries to rule the Vance family."
Volkov pressed the execute key.
A green progress bar appeared on the screen: UPLOADING PAYLOAD... 10%... 45%... 80%... 100%. SYSTEM OVERWRITE COMPLETE.
On the camera feeds overlooking the terminal, the massive gantry cranes suddenly shuddered, their steel arms swinging wildly toward the central fuel reservoirs.
Julian let out a loud, hysterical laugh, clapping his hands together in pure, unadulterated delight. "Yes! Look at it burn! Look at what I did to you, Emma!"
Suddenly, every screen inside the command trailer went black.
The hysterical laughter died in Julian’s throat. "What happened? Volkov! What’s wrong with the feed?"
Volkov smashed his hand against the keyboard, but the terminals were completely unresponsive. Seconds later, the black screens flashed once, and a single, crystal-clear high-definition video feed appeared across every monitor.
It was not a video of an exploding port terminal.
It was a live stream of Emma Vance, sitting gracefully behind her mahogany desk in Greenwich, drinking a cup of tea.
"Good evening, Julian," Emma’s voice sounded through the trailer’s high-end speakers, smooth, crisp, and entirely devoid of panic.
Julian gasped, taking a horrified step backward, knocking his cane against the metal floor. "How... how are you on this frequency?"
"You always were remarkably predictable, Uncle Julian," Emma said on the screen, taking a calm sip of tea before setting the cup down on its saucer with a soft click. "You spent three hundred million dollars hiring Mr. Volkov’s team to hack into a SCADA system that hasn't been connected to a live power grid since yesterday morning."
Volkov’s face went entirely white. "It... it was a sandbox environment... a honeypot!"
"A complete digital replica," Emma explained with a polite, terrifying smile. "Every line of code you uploaded was captured, decrypted, and mirrored directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber Security Division. You didn't just execute a cyber-attack, Julian—you committed an act of high-level terrorism against critical U.S. infrastructure on camera."
"No... no!" Julian shrieked, lunging toward the monitor as if he could strangle her through the glass. "You’re lying! You're bluffing!"
"I don't bluff, Julian," Emma replied softly. "And while you were watching my fake cranes move on your screen, my tactical security teams and federal marshals were tracing the satellite uplink you used to execute the attack."
Outside the command trailer, the night sky suddenly exploded with blinding light.
Multiple heavy tactical helicopters roared overhead, their spotlight beams piercing through the dark rain, illuminating the abandoned industrial park. Sirens wailed from every direction as armored vehicles slammed into positions, blocking every exit route around the trailer.
"FBI! HEAVY TACTICAL UNIT! STEP OUT WITH YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEADS!" a voice boomed over a bullhorn from outside.
Volkov instantly drew a sidearm, but before he could rack the slide, the heavy metal door of the trailer was blown off its hinges by a flashbang charge.
Smoke and deafening noise filled the small trailer. Tactical officers poured inside, tackling Volkov and the mercenary coders to the floor in seconds.
Julian Vance was thrown back against his chair, his cane clattering to the floor. An officer pinned his arms behind his back, snapping heavy steel cuffs over his frail wrists.
The monitor on the wall remained untouched by the flashbang. Emma sat on the screen, watching the chaotic arrest with cool, majestic indifference.
"You took everything from me!" Julian screamed, tears of rage and humiliation streaming down his wrinkled face as he was dragged toward the shattered door. "You ruined the Vance name!"
"No, Julian," Emma said, her voice piercing through the noise of the sirens and shouting officers. "The Vance name is finally clean. My children will carry it with pride, honor, and grace. You are nothing more than a footnote in a story I wrote entirely on my own terms."
The officer shoved Julian out into the pouring rain, dragging him toward an armored transport vehicle.

On the screen in Greenwich, Emma picked up her pen, signed the final quarterly expansion charter for Vanguard Capital, and closed the folder.
"File the paperwork, Liam," she said softly into her desk intercom.
