Chapter 2 - The Rebirth in the West Wing

Inside the west wing of the Vance manor, the atmosphere was a world away from the freezing storm outside.

The private medical suite was a state-of-the-art neonatal facility built in less than six hours under my father's personal orders. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the snow-covered pine forests, while silent medical monitors hummed with steady, rhythmic precision.

Two world-renowned pediatric specialists and four senior neonatal nurses stood duty around two climate-controlled incubators.

I sat in a high-backed leather armchair beside the glass cribs, wrapped in a plush cashmere robe. My face was still pale from the surgery, and every movement of my torso sent a sharp, dull ache across my lower abdomen, but I refused to take the heavy pain medication. I wanted my mind crystal clear.

My daughter, Grace, was sleeping peacefully, her tiny fist tucked under her chin, her breathing steady and deep. Beside her, my son, Alexander, was hooked up to a delicate oxygen monitor. His cheeks were starting to show a healthy, flush pink color, his tiny chest rising and falling in perfect cadence.

The heavy oak door opened quietly, and my father stepped into the suite.

Richard Vance was sixty-four years old, with sharp silver hair, piercing gray eyes that had made Wall Street titans weep, and a posture that commanded total obedience. In the business world, he was known as the "Iron Monarch"—a man who had built an empire by foreseeing every crash, calculating every betrayal, and mercy was a word he had never included in his vocabulary.

Yet, as he walked toward my chair, his footsteps were soft, almost hesitant. In his right hand, he carried a warm glass of almond milk and honey; in his left, a soft wool blanket.

"How are my grandchildren?" my father asked softly, kneeling beside my chair with a gentleness that would have shocked the global financial press.

"Alexander's lung capacity increased by twelve percent over the last three hours," I said, a faint, genuine smile touching my lips for the first time in two days. "The doctor says he won't need the oxygen support by tomorrow evening. Grace ate full feedings twice."

My father set the glass down, draped the wool blanket over my shoulders, and leaned down to kiss the top of my head. "And their mother?"

"Their mother is dead," I whispered, looking at my reflection in the dark glass of the incubator. "The woman who thought love meant enduring disrespect, who thought humility meant letting a coward treat her like an afterthought... she bled out on an operating table while her husband bought champagne for his mistress."

My father sat in the leather chair beside me, crossing his long legs. "David is still outside the gate. Liam gave him the rings."

I didn't turn my head. "Did he cry?"

"He cried for his bank account," my father said flatly. "He cried because he realized that the modest girl he left to rot in a hospital was the only pillar holding up his pathetic excuse for a life."

"I want everything, Dad," I said, my voice dropping into a register that made my father's gray eyes flicker with deep, proud satisfaction. "I don't just want a divorce. I want to tear down every brick of his company. I want Vanessa Reed to return every piece of jewelry, every dress, every hand-bag he bought her with corporate funds. I want his mother to understand what it feels like to live in a rented basement."

My father pulled a leather-bound tablet from his suit jacket and handed it to me.

"Your legal team was assembled at 3:00 AM," my father informed me. "It is headed by Arthur Vance, my senior corporate counsel, and Judge Margaret Holloway, the former chief of the Manhattan Family Court. We have filed three simultaneous actions."

I tapped the screen, reviewing the court filings:

Emergency Suit for Sole Custody and Total Termination of Parental Rights, citing willful abandonment during an active medical emergency, moral turpitude, and endangerment of premature infants.

Forensic Corporate Fraud and Embezzlement Indictment, naming David Cross and Vanessa Reed as co-conspirators in the illegal conversion of Vanguard-backed credit lines for personal luxury expenditure.

Immediate Judicial Seizure of All Personal and Real Assets, including the Soho penthouse, the Greenwich estate, his mother's vehicles, and forty-two offshore trading accounts.

"He tried to call eleven private equity firms in the last two hours," my father added with a faint, cold smirk. "Every single managing partner personally called me within five minutes to ask how they should execute the rejections. David Cross is currently radioactive in North America, Europe, and Asia. No bank will handle his wire transfers. No law firm will represent him without an upfront cash retainer—which he cannot pay because his cards are frozen."

A quiet knock sounded at the door, and Liam stepped inside, holding an encrypted satellite laptop.

"Miss Vance," Liam bowed his head respectfully. "We have intercepted an urgent conference call currently taking place inside Miss Vanessa Reed's Soho apartment."

I looked up, my eyes narrowing. "Put it on the speaker."

Liam set the laptop on the side table, tapping the screen to connect the audio feed.

Vanessa's shrill, panicked voice filled the quiet medical suite, echoing loudly against the glass incubators:

"What do you mean my card is declined?! I'm at the Bergdorf Goodman shoe department! I have three pairs of Manolo Blahniks on the counter! David, pick up your damn phone! You promised me we were going to Miami this weekend!"

Then came David's frantic, broken voice from the background, sound muffled as if he were calling from inside his car:

"Vanessa, shut up! Shut up and listen to me! Get out of that store right now! Go back to the apartment and start packing your bags!"

"Packing my bags?! Are you insane? Why aren't you answering my texts? Did that boring wife of yours have her stupid babies or what?!"

"Vanessa, she's not a boring wife!" David screamed through the phone, his voice dissolving into sheer, hysterical sobbing. "She's Evelyn Vance! Her father is Richard Vance! Vanguard Capital owns everything! They froze my accounts! They're taking my house! They're taking the penthouse! They're taking your car!"

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the audio feed.

Then came Vanessa's sharp, disbelief-filled gasp: "What... what did you just say? Richard Vance? The billionaire?"

"Yes! You idiot! Yes!" David roared. "She pretended to be poor for three years! The whole time, her father was funding my expansion loans! And now she's taking it all back because you called me during her C-section!"

"Wait... wait a minute, David," Vanessa's voice suddenly shifted, losing its sweet, affectionate tone, turning sharp, cold, and predatory. "What do you mean 'because I called you'? You were the one who came over! You were the one who bought me the diamond bracelet! You told me you were going to divorce her anyway!"

"Vanessa, you lied about chest pain!"

"I felt stressed!" Vanessa hissed. "Look, David, if you're bankrupt, don't involve me in this! The diamond bracelet is in my name! The penthouse lease is under my personal shell company!"

"It was paid for with my corporate card!" David screamed. "If I go down, you're going down with me!"

"Try it, David," Vanessa sneered, her tone dripping with pure venom. "I have text messages from you for six months proving you willingly transferred those funds to impress me. I'm calling my lawyer. Don't ever call this number again."

The line went dead with a harsh, electronic beep.

I sat in my chair, holding my warm glass of milk, listening to the absolute silence that followed.

My father looked at me, his gray eyes calm and unyielding. "What is your command, Evelyn?"

I set the milk glass down, leaned back against the plush leather headboard, and looked at my sleeping twins.

"Liam," I said softly.

"Yes, Miss Vance?"

"Issue the fraud indictments against Vanessa Reed immediately. Seize the Soho penthouse by noon today. Have the police arrest her at Bergdorf Goodman before she can leave the store with those shoes. Let the high-society press take her photograph in handcuffs."

"And David?" Liam asked.

I closed my eyes, a deep, beautiful sense of absolute power settling over my soul.

"Tell our legal team to file for immediate criminal asset forfeiture. I want David Cross in a courtroom by Friday. And make sure he sits in the defendant's box wearing the exact same rumpled suit he wore to dinner with his mistress."
