Chapter 6 - The Spider’s WebThe arrest of Daniel Hale on federal wire fraud and embezzlement charges made national headlines, reversing the PR narrative completely overnight. The public now saw Daniel for what he truly was: a greedy, abusive sociopath who had tried to leech off an heiress and almost killed her in the process.

However, while Daniel was behind bars awaiting trial without bail, one crucial question remained unanswered: The Aegis Project and my mother's death.
A week after the court victory, Arthur Vance called an urgent, private meeting at the Mercer estate. Sitting in the library with my father and me was Detective Marcus Cole, a retired senior investigator who had been secretly hired by my father ten years ago to probe my mother's "accident."
"Miss Mercer, Mr. Mercer," Detective Cole began, spreading several yellowed files across the coffee table. "When Daniel Hale made those wild claims on the news, we dug deep into his mother Vivian’s background and financial connections."
"Did you find a connection to the Aegis leaks?" I asked, sipping warm tea.
"More than a connection," Cole said, pulling out a faded photograph of a young Vivian standing next to a distinguished-looking man in a dark suit. "Twenty years ago, Vivian wasn't just running a small logistics company. Her late husband was deeply indebted to an international corporate espionage syndicate known as The Apex Group."
My father’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Apex... they were our primary rival during the development of Aegis."
"Precisely," Cole continued. "Vivian’s husband went bankrupt, but right before he died, Vivian took over the business transactions. Ten years ago, Vivian was paid three million dollars through offshore accounts. In exchange, she provided Apex with internal travel logs from Mercer Global’s executive team—logs she obtained by bribing a low-level secretary in your headquarters."
I felt a cold shiver run through my chest. "So Vivian was The Broker."
"Yes," Cole confirmed. "She supplied the exact route your mother took on the coastal highway the night she died. She was paid off, cleared her family debts, and used the remaining blood money to set up her son, Daniel, with his first business venture."
My father stood up slowly, his knuckles white as he leaned against the heavy wooden table. The sheer rage vibrating from him was palpable. "All these years... the woman who murdered my wife was living in the same city, sending her son to marry my daughter."
"Wait," I said, my mind racing as I connected the dots. "Did Daniel know? Did Daniel marry me on purpose because he knew who I was?"
Cole looked down at his files nervously before answering. "We intercepted text messages between Daniel and Vivian from four years ago, recovered from Vivian’s seized phone during the asset forfeiture."
Cole pulled out a printed transcript and read it aloud:
Vivian (4 years ago): “She’s using the alias Emma Reed. She’s Alexander Mercer’s daughter. Marry her, Daniel. Once you have a child with her, we own the Mercer bloodline. If her father ever finds out about what I did ten years ago, having his grandchild will be our ultimate leverage.”
I covered my mouth with my hand, tears of shock and fury pricking at the corners of my eyes.
My entire marriage—the romantic chance meeting at the art gallery, the sweet courtship, the three years of quiet domestic life—had been a cold, calculated, predatory trap. They hadn't just mistreated me; they had stalked me, hunted me, and used me as a pawn in a ten-year-old murder plot.
"They didn't just break my heart," I whispered, my voice trembling with profound anger. "They used my mother's blood to build their lives."
My father put his hand on my shoulder, his voice thick with emotion. "I will make sure Vivian Hale spends the rest of her natural life in a maximum-security prison cell, Emma. I swear it on your mother’s memory."
May you like
"No, Father," I said, wiping away a single rogue tear and looking up at him with absolute resolve. "Sending her to prison is the law's job. But making sure she faces the full truth of what she destroyed... that's my job."
The very next morning, accompanied by Arthur Vance and two armed security guards, I drove to the county detention facility where Vivian Hale was being held in protective custody after her assets were seized and her eviction was finalized.
