Chapter 4 - Secrets and SnakesThe words echoed in my head like a striking bell. The Aegis Project. Your mother’s death.

Ten years ago, my mother, Eleanor Mercer, had died in a tragic car accident off the coastal highway. It was the defining trauma of my youth, the event that had driven my father into deep, stoic isolation and eventually pushed me to abandon my family name in search of a simpler, peaceful existence.
I stood in the grand hallway outside my father's study, holding the silent phone in my hand. My heart was pounding faster than it had when the Hales were threatening me.
I pushed open the heavy oak doors. My father was sitting near the fireplace, holding an old silver-framed photograph of my mother.
"Father," I said softly, stepping inside.
He looked up, quickly trying to mask the sorrow in his eyes with his usual commanding composure. "Emma. Is Lily asleep?"
"She is," I said, walking over and taking a seat across from him. "Father... Daniel just called me."
Alexander’s eyes narrowed instantly, his body tensing. "How did he get your secure line? I will fire the head of security tonight—"
"That doesn't matter," I interrupted. "He said something before he hung up. He threatened to expose something called the 'Aegis Project'. He said it was connected to Mom's accident."
The silver picture frame slipped slightly in my father’s hand. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking older and far more fragile than I had ever seen him.
"Daniel... knows about Aegis?" my father whispered, genuine shock shaking his voice.
"What is it, Father?" I demanded gently, leaning forward. "No more secrets between us. I almost died three weeks ago. I’m not a child anymore. What was the Aegis Project?"
Alexander let out a long, shuddering sigh, setting the frame down on the side table. He rubbed his temples before looking up at me with eyes full of ancient regret.
"Ten years ago," Alexander began quietly, "Mercer Global was developing a revolutionary clean-energy storage technology under the code name Aegis. It was worth billions, but more importantly, it had the power to render traditional energy cartels obsolete."
"What does that have to do with Mom?"
"Your mother was the lead biochemical engineer on the project," Alexander revealed, his voice breaking slightly. "A corporate competitor tried to buy the patents from us. When we refused, they tried to steal them. They tampered with the brake line of your mother's vehicle to force us into a settlement... but the tampered line failed prematurely on the coastal highway."
A chill ran down my spine. "It wasn't an accident? Mom was murdered?"
"Yes," Alexander said heavily. "I spent the last ten years hunting down everyone responsible. I destroyed the company that ordered the hit. I put six men in prison. But... there was a middleman. An insider who leaked your mother’s travel routes to the sabotages."
"Who?" I asked, my fists clenching so hard my nails dug into my palms.
"The insider was never formally identified," Alexander said. "We only had a pseudonym: The Broker. I covered up the entire investigation under the Aegis code name to protect you, Emma. If the public or our rivals knew you were Eleanor’s daughter, you would have become a target. That's why I agreed when you wanted to leave and live as Emma Reed—I thought you would be safer invisible."
I sat in stunned silence as the pieces of my life reassembled themselves in a terrifying new picture. My father hadn’t been distant because he was heartless; he had been pushing me away to shield me from the lethal crossfire of corporate war.
"How does Daniel know about this?" I asked, my brain working rapidly.
"The Hales... they were never a major player," Alexander mused, his brow furrowing in deep thought. "Unless... Vivian’s late father. Vivian’s family used to operate a mid-tier logistics firm twenty years ago. If her family was involved in providing transport data back then..."
"They were the middlemen," I realized with horrifying clarity. "Daniel’s family wasn't just abusive to me out of arrogance. They knew who I was! Or at least, Vivian’s family had connections to the tragedy!"
Before my father could respond, Arthur Vance burst into the study without knocking—an unprecedented breach of protocol for the polite attorney.
"Mr. Mercer! Miss Mercer! You need to see this," Arthur said, turning on the large news monitor mounted on the wall.
The screen lit up with a breaking news banner: HALE ENTERPRISES CEO EXPOSES MERCER CAPITAL CORRUPTION.
On the screen stood Daniel Hale, looking disheveled, wild-eyed, and desperate, standing behind a microphone outside the city courthouse surrounded by reporters.
"Alexander Mercer destroyed my business because I discovered his dark secrets!" Daniel screamed into the microphones, his face contorted in fanatic rage. "He murdered his own wife ten years ago to cover up illegal environmental dumping in the Aegis Project! And now, he has kidnapped my newborn daughter and my wife, forcing her to stay silent!"
I gasped, standing up from my chair.
"He's spinning the narrative," Arthur warned. "He’s preemptively launching a public relations war to make himself look like a whistleblower before our fraud charges reach the grand jury!"
My father stood up, his regal stature returning instantly, his eyes burning with absolute, deadly focus.

"He wants a war in the mud," Alexander said coldly. "Then we will give him one. Arthur, prepare the legal counter-offensive. Emma..." He looked at me, his gaze softening with fierce protection. "Stay in the estate. It's not safe."
"No," I said, stepping forward with unwavering determination. "He used my mother's death to frame you, and he used my daughter to paint himself as a victim. I'm not staying in this house, Father. It's time for Emma Mercer to step into the light."
