Chapter 3 - Shadows of the PastThe Mercer estate sat nestled in the rolling, secured hills on the outskirts of the city—a place of quiet majesty, sprawling gardens, and absolute security. For four years, I had deliberately stayed away from this place, choosing to live a modest life as "Emma Reed" because I wanted to prove to myself that I could exist without my father's immense wealth.

I had met Daniel at a small community art gallery where I worked as an assistant curator. He had been charming, attentive, and seemingly gentle. When he proposed, I made the conscious decision not to reveal my true identity as Emma Mercer, the sole heiress to the Mercer industrial empire. I wanted a marriage built on love, not dollar signs.
How foolish I had been.
The primary guest wing of the Mercer mansion had been transformed into a state-of-the-art medical recovery suite within twelve hours. Top pediatric specialists monitored baby Lily, while an elite surgical team tended to my severe internal infection caused by the physical trauma Vivian had subjected me to.
For two weeks, I did nothing but heal, feed my baby, and listen to the quiet, rhythmic humming of the estate's security patrols.
On the fifteenth day, I felt strong enough to walk into my father’s study. The room smelled of cedarwood, old leather, and expensive cigars. My father was sitting behind a massive oak desk, reviewing a mountain of legal documents.
"You should be resting, Emma," he said, setting down his pen immediately and offering me a warm, worried smile.
"I’m done resting, Father," I said, sitting down in the high-backed leather chair across from him. Lily was sleeping soundly in a bassinet nearby. "I want to know everything. What is happening with the lawsuits?"
Arthur Vance, who was standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, stepped forward with a thick document binder.
"The divorce papers were served to Daniel Hale three days ago, Miss Mercer," Arthur explained. "We are seeking full legal and physical custody of Lily, with zero visitation rights for Mr. Hale, citing gross negligence, emotional cruelty, and financial abandonment. We have also filed formal civil charges for personal injury and intentional infliction of emotional distress against both Daniel and Vivian Hale."
"How are they reacting?" I asked, my voice calm.
"Panicked," Arthur replied with a subtle, dark smile. "Hale Enterprises is bankrupt. The announcement was made public on Tuesday. Their stock plummeted by eighty-nine percent in six hours. Daniel tried to secure emergency funding from several foreign investment funds, but your father made a few phone calls. No financial institution on this continent will grant him so much as a credit card."
"And Vivian?"
"She is currently residing in a small, rented two-bedroom apartment on the south side of town," Arthur said. "The Hale mansion was seized by the bank yesterday morning to cover their primary defaulted loans. All of their high-end automobiles, fine art, and jewelry bought on business accounts have been impounded."
I took a deep breath. A part of me—the old, soft Emma—felt a pang of sorrow. But then I remembered the ice-cold bucket of filthy water splashing over my open wounds, the sight of my daughter shivering, and Daniel watching his mother abuse me while he checked his watch.
The sadness evaporated, replaced by steel.
"It’s not enough," I said quietly.
My father raised an eyebrow, a proud glint appearing in his sharp gray eyes. "Oh?"
"Daniel didn't just neglect me," I continued, standing up and walking toward the window looking out over the Mercer grounds. "He actively manipulated the accounts of Hale Enterprises. While I was married to him, I occasionally looked over his financial records when he asked me to organize his office. He was diverting offshore funds into a private account under his mother's maiden name—Vance-Ross. He was committing tax evasion and wire fraud long before his company started failing."
Alexander leaned back in his leather chair, folding his hands. "Are you sure about this, sweetheart?"
"I have a photographic memory, Father. You know that," I said, turning back to him. "I remember the account numbers, the shell corporation names in the Cayman Islands, and the dates of the transfers. He wasn't just an arrogant husband. He was a criminal hiding behind a respectable family name."
"Arthur," Alexander commanded quietly. "Get our forensic accountants on this immediately. If Daniel Hale broke the law, I don't just want him bankrupt. I want him in a federal penitentiary."
"Right away, sir," Arthur said, bowing his head before slipping silently out of the room.
My father stood up, walked around the desk, and pulled me into a gentle, protective embrace. "You're strong, Emma. Stronger than I thought you were when you ran away four years ago."
"I ran away because I thought I could buy a normal life by hiding who I was," I whispered into his shoulder. "I was wrong. I don't need to hide anymore."
The quiet sanctuary of the Mercer estate was comforting, but outside its gates, the storm was far from over.
That evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, my phone—a new, secure encrypted device my father had given me—rang with an unknown number.
I answered it.
"Emma?" Daniel’s voice came through the speaker, raspy, frantic, and clearly intoxicated. "Emma, please! Don't do this to me! They took everything! The house, the cars, the business! My mother is crying constantly... she's sick, Emma! You have to stop your father!"
"You watched me bleed, Daniel," I said, my voice deadpan and icy. "You didn't care if I died in that kitchen."
"I was stupid! I was wrong!" he sobbed hysterically. "I'll do anything! I'll kneel in front of you! I'll fire my mother! Just give me my life back! Give me my daughter!"
"She is my daughter," I replied. "And you will never see either of us again."
"If you ruin me, Emma," Daniel’s voice suddenly dropped, turning vicious, desperate, and toxic, "I swear to God I won't go down alone. I know things about your father's past. I know why you left him four years ago!"
I froze. "What are you talking about?"
May you like
"You think your precious father is a saint?" Daniel sneered through the receiver. "Ask him about the 'Aegis Project'. Ask him why your mother really died ten years ago!"
The line went dead with a harsh click.
