Chapter 5 - The Reckoning in the Study

Ten minutes later, the grand hall was empty except for the Ashford men, Sarah, Julian, and the four boys.

General Thomas sat heavily in his high-backed leather armchair by the roaring fire, looking twenty years older than he had that afternoon. The formidable patriarch, who had stared down enemy combatants and negotiated international treaties, looked completely defeated. He looked up at Sarah, his eyes clouding with a deep, profound regret.

"Sarah..." Thomas began, his voice barely above a whisper. "I... I was wrong. I let pride blind me. I let Grant write a narrative that suited our vanity. Can... can we fix this? Can my great-grandsons bear the Ashford name properly?"

Sarah looked down at her four sons.

Carter stepped forward, looking up at his great-grandfather with an expression of cool, dispassionate evaluation.

"We already have a name, General," Carter said calmly, his voice carrying an adult composure. "We are the Vances. Our mother taught us honor, hard work, and truth—qualities that seem to be in very short supply in this house."

Thomas flinched as though he had been struck by a physical blow.

Sarah smiled gently, placing a hand on Carter’s shoulder. "You wanted a lonely, childless woman to walk through your doors tonight, Grant," she said, turning her gaze to her trembling ex-husband, who was slumped against the bookshelf. "You wanted to feed your ego by parading your new life in front of a ghost you thought you had buried."

Grant looked up, tears finally spilling over his eyelids. His arrogance was entirely gone, replaced by the hollow shell of a man who had gambled everything on lies and lost. "Sarah... please. I was stupid. I was weak. Let me see my boys. Just give me one chance to be a father."

"You had eight years to be a father, Grant," Sarah replied, her voice steady and unyielding. "You chose a legacy of glass. And now it's broken."

She turned toward the double doors, gesturing to her sons. "Boys, let's go. The private jet is warmed up. We have a real Christmas Eve waiting for us back home."

"Yes, Mom," the four boys chorused in unison.

As they walked toward the exit, Julian paused beside General Thomas, tossing a thick manila envelope onto the old man's lap.

"That's the final settlement paperwork for the estate lease," Julian said casually. "Vance Global is exercising its buyout clause. You have thirty days to vacate the premises. Merry Christmas, General."
