Chapter 1 - The Descent at the Ashford Gates

The freezing wind howled across the snow-dusted ridges of Colorado Springs, biting sharply against the polished limestone facade of the Ashford family estate. Inside the grand manor, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of roasted pine, expensive cinnamon candles, and old money. A hundred guests—retired generals, high-ranking defense contractors, and elite politicians—mingled beneath the towering twelve-foot Christmas tree in the main hall. Laughter echoed off the vaulted ceilings, and champagne glasses clinked in rhythmic celebration.

At the center of it all stood Major Grant Ashford. Impeccably tailored in a charcoal bespoke suit, his silver-flecked hair neatly cropped and his posture rigid with military precision, Grant looked every bit the victorious commander. By his side stood his radiant fiancée, Danielle—a woman draped in emerald silk and diamonds, handpicked by the Ashford dynasty to secure their legacy.

Grant glanced at his diamond-encrusted Rolex. It was 6:30 PM.

"She's not coming, Grant," Danielle purred, resting a manicured hand lightly against his lapel. Her voice carried just enough sweetness to mask the smug satisfaction beneath it. "You shouldn't have even bothered sending the invitation. A woman living alone in a modest apartment... stepping back into this world? It would be far too humiliating for her."

Grant gave a cold, confident smirk. "She'll come, Danielle. Or rather, she wanted to come, but pride will keep her away. I wanted her to see what she threw away eight years ago. I wanted her to walk past these gates, look through these windows at the life she could have had, and realize how completely she was left behind."

He raised his glass of vintage scotch, letting his gaze sweep across the portraits of generations of Ashford commanders lining the wood-paneled walls. He was entirely convinced that his ex-wife, Sarah, was sitting alone in some cramped, quiet kitchen, staring at his invitation with bitter tears, completely isolated and childless, just as he had spent years telling everyone she was.

Suddenly, a strange, low-frequency thrumming vibration rattled the leaded glass windows of the grand salon.

The heavy thumping sound grew rapidly louder, vibrating deep within the floorboards beneath the guests' polished shoes. Conversations stuttered. Heads turned toward the high arched windows facing the vast, private helicopter landing pad at the edge of the estate’s expansive north lawn.

"What in God's name is that?" a retired four-star general muttered, setting his drink down on a mahogany side table.

Outside, a blinding wash of white searchlight beams cut straight through the falling snow, illuminating the pristine white expanse of the lawn. A heavy tactical transport helicopter—bearing the dark, matte insignia of a private aviation fleet—flashed its landing lights and began a dramatic, controlled descent. The downwash kicked up a furious blizzard of fresh snow, swirling like a mini-hurricane against the glass panes.

Grant’s smile faltered. His hand froze halfway to his mouth, the ice clinking sharply against the rim of his crystal glass.

"Is that... an aircraft?" Danielle asked, her voice losing its melodic composure as the wind whipped against the heavy oak front doors.

On the landing pad, the heavy skids of the military-grade chopper touched down with a solid thud. The twin turbine engines whined down, settling into a heavy, rhythmic idle. The cabin door slid open with a sharp mechanical hiss, and a set of folding metal stairs dropped down onto the snow.

Every single conversation in the Ashford manor died instantly. The silence was absolute, save for the howling wind and the purr of the jet engines outside.

All eyes locked onto the doorway.

First came a pair of polished leather boots stepping down onto the tarmac, followed by the sight of a woman descending from the aircraft.

She wore a long, tailored charcoal wool coat that caught the wind, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, sophisticated knot. Her expression was calm, composed, and utterly fearless. There was no trace of hesitation, no shadow of the lonely, broken woman Grant had spent years describing to his family.

And then, stepping down right behind her, came four figures.

May you like

Four boys. All of them standing side by side, bundled in matching winter coats, wearing identical expressions of quiet, sharp curiosity. They looked up at the massive stone estate with eyes that missed nothing.

Grant Ashford dropped his glass. It shattered against the hardwood floor, splashing amber scotch across his shoes, but he didn't even notice. His face went completely, deathly white.
