Chapter 2 - The Stunned Silence of the Elite

The heavy oak doors of the Ashford manor swung open, unbidden by the butler, as Sarah stepped across the threshold. The blast of cold winter air swept into the foyer, carrying the fresh scent of snow and ozone.

For three seconds, the hundred most elite guests in Colorado Springs stood frozen like statues.

Grant could not breathe. His chest felt as though it had been compressed by a hydraulic press. His eyes darted from Sarah’s calm, unblinking gaze down to the four children standing in a neat, disciplined row beside her.

They were carbon copies of him.

The sharp jawline. The exact shape of the dark, observant eyes. The aristocratic tilt of the chin. Even the way the oldest boy—Carter, standing tall at eight years old—held his shoulders back mirrored the exact parade-rest posture Grant had drilled into himself at West Point.

"Sarah..." Grant whispered, the name scraping raw against his throat.

"Good evening, Grant," Sarah’s voice rang out, clear, melodic, and ringing with absolute authority. It echoed off the high vaulted ceilings, carrying effortlessly across the silent room. "I received your invitation. I must say, your home hasn't changed a bit. Still desperately clinging to the past, aren't you?"

Murmurs erupted instantly through the crowd.

"Who is that?" "Is that his ex-wife?" "Whose children are those? Good Lord, they look just like him..."

Danielle stepped forward, her face twisted in an ugly mix of shock and pure venom. She marched right up to Sarah, her emerald silk dress swishing aggressively. "What is the meaning of this stunt, Sarah? You can't just charter a tactical aircraft and crash a private family gathering! And who invited these... these urchins into the Ashford home?"

Before Sarah could even blink, eight-year-old Mason stepped half a step forward. His hazel eyes narrowed with a chilling, mature sharpness that belonged in a boardroom, not on a playground.

"My name is Mason Ashford-Vance," the boy said, his voice unnaturally calm and clear. "And we were invited by our father’s official holiday correspondence. Though, judging by the look on his face right now, I’m guessing he didn't expect us to RSVP."

Gasps rippled through the gathering.

Ashford-Vance.

The name hit the room like physical shrapnel. The Vance family wasn't just wealthy; they were the titans of global defense logistics and aerospace engineering—a dynasty with ten times the net worth and political capital of the Ashford family. For years, rumors had swirled in high-society circles that Sarah had vanished into the powerful Vance orbit after her bitter divorce, but Grant had always laughed those rumors off, assuring everyone that she was a penniless nobody living in a studio apartment.

"Lies," Grant choked out, finally finding his voice as he pushed past Danielle. He stumbled forward, stopping two feet away from Sarah. His face was purple with rage and disbelief. "This is a sick joke. You're renting actors! You're trying to humiliate me in front of my family and my fiancée!"

Sarah didn't flinch. She tilted her head up, looking straight into the eyes of the man who had abandoned her while she was carrying his children, the man who had tried to erase her existence.

"Actors, Grant?" Sarah asked softly, a dangerous, cold smile touching the corners of her lips. "Would you like to run a DNA swab right now? Your father’s private medical clinic is just down the hall. We can test all four of them. Carter, Mason, Reid, and Owen. Your legitimate, acknowledged bloodline."

The youngest of the quadruplets, Owen, peeked out from behind Sarah’s coat. He looked up at Grant with wide, innocent eyes and asked in a piping, crystal-clear voice, "Mom, is this the man who forgot to send us birthday cards for eight years? The one with the small house and the big mouth?"

May you like

A muffled snort of laughter escaped from a retired colonel near the back of the room, quickly hidden behind a cough.

Grant felt his world spinning off its axis. Eight years of lies, eight years of portraying himself as the noble, hard-working husband who had been mercifully freed from a delusional, childless ex-wife—all of it burning down to ash in front of the most powerful people in the state.
