Chapter 10: The Trap Is Sprung

The drama unfolding in the public eye reached a fever pitch by the following morning. The financial media was calling it the "Whitmore Meltdown." Paparazzi lined the streets outside the corporate headquarters, hoping to catch a glimpse of the warring executives.

But inside the secure command center of the Whitmore-Lopez tower, the atmosphere was clinical, focused, and utterly lethal.

Caroline sat at the center console, her fingers flying across a customized holographic interface. Beside her, Nathan kept a constant watch on the global markets, while Marcus Vance coordinated with a specialized tactical unit of the FBI’s Cyber Crime Division standing by in Washington D.C. and Switzerland.

"The Trojan horse has fully integrated into Julian's Zurich network," Caroline announced, her voice calm despite the immense stakes. "He hasn't just downloaded the tracker; he’s actively routing it through his offshore dummy corporations to verify the code. Every time he attempts to validate a line of our technology, he is legally linking his personal assets to the stolen data."

"He's greedy," Nathan observed, leaning over her shoulder, his chest pressing against her back as he looked at the data streams. "He can't help himself. He wants to ensure he has a monopoly before he launches his counter-offensive."

"Marcus, what’s the status on the FBI team?" Caroline asked, not breaking her gaze from the screen.

"They're in position outside Julian's downtown penthouse and his corporate office in Switzerland," Marcus replied. "The moment we give the signal that the data transfer is complete, they execute the federal warrants for corporate espionage, extortion, and cyber-terrorism. But we need him to initiate the final download. He has to enter his personal biometric encryption key to unlock the master file."

"He’s going to call me any minute demanding the second half of the key," Nathan said. "The closing bell is in two hours. He thinks he has us cornered."

Right on cue, Nathan's encrypted phone rang. He switched it to speakerphone, signaling Caroline to begin the final trace.

"Nathan," Julian's voice echoed through the high-tech command center, dripping with arrogant satisfaction. "The first half of the code is authentic. My engineers are impressed. But the clock is ticking toward the closing bell. The media is practically writing Caroline's corporate obituary. Send the second half, and I’ll suppress the files."

Nathan looked at Caroline, who nodded firmly, her fingers hovering over the activation sequence.

"I’m sending it now, Julian," Nathan said, his voice dropping its previous weakness, replaced by a cold, resonant clarity that made Julian pause on the other end of the line. "But before I do, I want you to remember something. Five years ago, I made the mistake of thinking this company belonged to me. I thought power was about control. But I learned the hard way that true power belongs to the person who creates the future, not the one who tries to steal it."

"What are you talking about?" Julian snapped, a sudden note of suspicion creeping into his tone.

"I’m talking about my wife," Nathan said proudly.

Caroline slammed her palm down on the biometric pad of her console. "The file is sent, Julian. Along with a complete federal asset seizure order."

On the television screens inside Julian's penthouse, the financial news suddenly cut away from the stock ticker. A breaking news banner flashed across the screen: BREAKING: Federal Authorities Arrest Major Tech Investor Julian Cross on Charges of Extortion, Cyber-Warfare, and Corporate Espionage. All Global Assets Frozen.

Before Julian could even process the words, the heavy oak doors of his penthouse were blown off their hinges by an FBI tactical team. Flashbangs detonated, illuminating the luxury apartment in blinding white light. Julian dropped his phone, thrown to the floor by federal agents, his hands pinned behind his back as the silver pocket watch shattered against the polished marble tile.

Through the phone line, Nathan and Caroline heard the distant sounds of shouting, the rustle of zip-ties, and the definitive declaration of the arresting officer: "Julian Cross, you are under arrest."

Marcus smiled, cutting the connection. "It’s over. The threat is completely neutralized."

The command center erupted into cheers from the select engineering and security staff who had stayed loyal. But Nathan and Caroline didn't look at the screens. They looked at each other. The shadow that had hung over their family for years had finally been eradicated.

Nathan reached out, wrapping his arms around Caroline's waist and lifting her slightly off the ground. She laughed, a sound of pure relief, throwing her arms around his neck.

"We did it," she whispered against his ear. "The foundation held."

"It did," Nathan said, kissing her deeply as the staff politely looked away. "Now, let’s go fix our stock."

Within an hour, Caroline and Nathan released a joint, live-streamed video statement directly from the corporate floor. They revealed the entire sting operation, showing that the supposed "rift" and stock drop had been a carefully coordinated trap authorized by federal agencies to capture a international corporate criminal.

The market reaction was instantaneous and unprecedented. The Whitmore-Lopez stock didn't just recover; it skyrocketed by thirty-five percent in late-day trading, hitting an all-time historical high. The world didn't just see a powerful company; they saw an unbreakable alliance.
