Chapter 6: The Rivals’ Trap

Just as the family was beginning to find its rhythm, the corporate world struck back. Clara Montgomery, the ruthless CEO of Montgomery Utilities—the rival conglomerate that Nathan had snubbed right before his departure—saw Nathan’s retirement as an opportunity to destroy both Whitmore Energy and Apex Aero in a single move.

Clara launched a hostile takeover bid, backed by anonymous foreign investors. Worse, she had acquired the corrupted data files that Margaret Whitmore had stored on her private servers—files that contained early, unrefined versions of Caroline’s battery designs. Clara leaked them to the press, claiming that Apex Aero had stolen technology from Whitmore Energy, creating a massive intellectual property scandal that threatened to destroy Caroline's company overnight.

The news broke on a Friday morning. By noon, protesters and reporters were swarming the gates of Caroline’s Austin estate.

Inside the house, Caroline was frantic, her laptop screen flashing with legal notices from the Department of Energy, who were threatening to freeze her five-hundred-million-dollar grant until the patent dispute was resolved.

"They are going to freeze our production lines," Caroline said, her hands shaking as she typed. "If the lines stop for more than a week, we default on our delivery contracts. Apex Aero will go bankrupt, Nathan. Everything I built to protect the boys... it’s going to vanish."

Nathan stood behind her, his face grim but completely focused. The corporate wolf that had slept for two months had just awakened, but this time, he wasn't fighting for profit. He was fighting for his wife’s legacy.

"They think we are divided," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous tone. "Clara Montgomery thinks because we are divorced, we will sue each other over the patents and let her buy up the scraps. She doesn't know who she’s dealing with."

He picked up his phone and dialed the number for Marcus Vance, the new CEO of Whitmore Energy. "Marcus, call an emergency press conference at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. tomorrow morning. Joint broadcast. Whitmore Energy and Apex Aero."

"Nathan, what are you doing?" Caroline asked, looking up at him in shock.

"We are going to give them a lesson in unified technology," Nathan smiled fiercely. "Five years ago, I let the lawyers handle our separation. Tomorrow, we show the world that the technology behind both companies belongs to one person. You."

That night, they boarded a private flight to Washington D.C., leaving the boys safely hidden at a secure ranch owned by Dr. Andrew Collins, who remained their loyal guardian. In the cabin of the plane, there was no first-class awkwardness like their flight from New York. They sat side by side at a table, their heads bent together over blueprints and legal documents, their minds working in perfect, brilliant synchronization just like the old days in Austin.

As Nathan watched Caroline quickly sketch an alternative circuit design to prove her patent originality, he realized that she had never belonged in his shadow. She was the light that guided the entire industry.

"Caroline," he said softly, reaching over to place his hand gently over hers, stopping her pen. "Tomorrow, after we win this... I want to give you back your original blueprints. The ones from the Austin garage. I never threw them away. I kept them in my personal safe in Manhattan. I looked at them every night after you left."

Caroline looked at his hand, then into his eyes. The coldness from the New York flight was gone, replaced by a deep, quiet understanding. "Let’s win the trial first, Nathan."
